Detailed Job Description

Function: The purpose of this position is to assist the Office of Technology Transfer in the evaluation of emerging technologies from the SIU-System research and development activities and to provide marketing and outreach efforts for the Office of Technology Transfer on behalf of the SIU-System. The position will be based at the Carbondale, IL campus.

Duties and Responsibilities: The following information is intended to be representative of the work performed by incumbent in this position and is not all-inclusive. Technology Marketing and Industry Relations: 40%

  • Develop new and creative ways to promote services offered by the Office of Technology Transfer.
  • Integrate when appropriate with local businesses and community groups on the Carbondale campus where the Office of Technology Transfer may benefit or assist the community.
  • Provide support for economic development initiatives in the regions for all campuses as it relates to university intellectual property enhancement.
  • Create marketing materials for technologies developed throughout the SIU-System.
  • Establish and maintain a website related to Office of Technology Transfer activities and technologies available for licensure.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of marketing strategies to identify prospective licensees or investors to advance the value of a technology, including leveraging technology portals available by 3rd party providers.
  • Follow up with inventors on further development requirements/suggestions to improve their likelihood of obtaining patent protection and licensure.
  • Compile and maintain a list of prospective technology licensees and research collaboration partners for technologies developed within the SIU-System.
  • Initiate contact and communicate directly with prospective licensees regarding licensing opportunities.
  • Report feedback from prospective licensees and industry partners on technology interest.

Technology Analysis: 40%

  • Review technologies from the various campuses of the Southern Illinois University-System in any and all fields for the Director to assess their likelihood of having patentable merit and commercial value.
  • Research prior art that would have an impact on a proposed invention by investigating published papers and reviewing issued patents and published pending patent applications.
  • Assess the marketability potential of a proposed technology and evaluate the cost/benefit of pursuing a proposed intellectual property strategy.
  • Advise researchers on needed data or studies for intellectual property advancement.

Technology Administration: 15%

  • Administer the policies and procedures that relate to intellectual property adopted by SIU Carbondale, SIU School of Medicine and SIU Edwardsville.
  • Assist with the event development and deployment of functions related to research on the campuses of SIU Carbondale, SIU School or Medicine and SIU Edwardsville.
  • Help coordinate and manage internal grants that assist intellectual property development for the Carbondale and Edwardsville campuses.
  • Promote and assist with the other internal awards based in Carbondale, Edwardsville and School of Medicine campuses to incentivize commercialization.
  • Assist with the training of personnel interning within the Office of Technology Transfer.
  • Provide support for the University Intellectual Property Committee.

Miscellaneous: 5%

• Assist with the education of faculty, staff and students on technology transfer and intellectual property
• Assist with other duties as assigned by the Director of OTT.

Authority and Responsibility: The Director of Technology Transfer will educate and train the employee with regard to the relationship of the technologies to the business practicalities and legal implications. The Director will supervise the tasks performed by the employee. The Technology Transfer Commercialization Coordinator will not have signature authority and should consult the Director of Technology Transfer, and, as appropriate, the Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Affairs, the Vice Chancellor of Research, the Associate Provost of Research and/or the Office of the General Counsel, on matters concerning contract approval. The Technology Transfer Commercialization Coordinator will have authority to make limited representations as it relates to institutional positions during negotiations of Licenses, patent prosecution dispositions and others as previously approved by the Director of Technology Transfer.

Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in a Physical Science, Life Science or Engineering related area is required; an advanced degree is preferred. Marketing skills plus excellent verbal and written communication skills to varied audiences will be required. A qualified candidate must be competent to explain new technologies and discoveries to prospective licensees and understand how these technologies meet the business objectives of 3rd party industry partners.

Desirable Qualifications: A second degree or certification that reflects experience in marketing and/or communication or work experience in marketing or communication is strongly desirable. Laboratory bench experience and experience performing and literature investigation is preferred. Some knowledge about the patent process is desirable, although not required.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands: The Physical Demands of this work are generally limited to working on a computer and going to various meetings. Thus, light walking and working on a computer will entail most of the physical demands. On the rare occasion, some minor lifting is required to transport display signs for exhibits and boxes for storage. Some driving will be required between campuses and other sites.
