Detailed Job Description

Working primarily evenings and weekends with some daytime shifts, the Electronic Production and Design Lab Monitor administers the department facilities when classes are not taking place.  S/he assists students with equipment/software operation. S/he teaches the students troubleshooting skills to identify possible sources of malfunction and better understand all concepts involved.  The Lab Monitor also provides technical support for classes and helps maintain the equipment and software within the department.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist students with hardware/software operation and curricular concepts.
  • Ensure that hardware/software works properly at each lab station.
  • Remain knowledgeable with all newly installed hardware/software and its role within the curriculum.
  • Administer the facilities during lab hours.
  • Keep records of student attendance, policy infractions, and equipment inventory.
  • Ensure security of the equipment and facilities.
  • Provide technical support to faculty for classes.
  • Setup/strike additional equipment for classes.
  • Implement changes to the facilities, particularly between semesters (installing and configuring new hardware/software, reconfiguring and updating the hardware/software environment, ensuring that facilities are ready for the start of the semester).
  • Direct and document department events/concerts outside of the regular work schedule.
  • Train new employees on day-to-day procedure, policies, and administrative software.

Possible Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist with special department/division events.
  • Participate in coordinated projects with faculty.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Music Technology or commensurate experience.
  • Expertise with the Macintosh operating system, primary curricular software (Logic, Digital Performer, Pro Tools, Reason), related technologies (Core Audio, Core MIDI, ReWire), and central curriculum topics (sequencing, modular functions, signal flow, sound design, audio editing and recording, DSP theory and applications, session management and file structure).
  • Strong familiarity with multimedia software (Final Cut, DVD Studio Pro, Flash, Dreamweaver, Photoshop), software synthesizers (Nord Modular G2, Tassman, Moog Modular V2, Kontakt, FM7), digital audio software (Peak, SoundHack, Max/MSP, Csound), and related concepts.
  • Experience with studio-specific topics (sync, surround sound, microphone theory, recording, monitoring setup, console routing and operation).
