Research Education Specialist: The Department of Plant Biology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale invites applications for a Research Education Specialist for its National Institutes of Health-funded Southern Illinois Bridges to the Baccalaureate program. This is a term, Administrative/Professional position. This position reports to the Project Director, and works closely with representatives from John A. Logan and Shawnee Community Colleges.
Responsibilities: For the duration of the grant, this position will: develop and implement hands-on laboratory activities for undergraduate students using microscopes and imaging capture equipment; oversee a summer research experience for community college undergraduate students; assist in identification and recruitment of students; assist in supervising program staff; maintain records and process paperwork; coordinate events; facilitate communication between community college partners, program participants, and program staff; work with program evaluator to monitor and collect data for program evaluation; and draft annual report information summaries.
Required Qualifications: A Ph.D., four years of university-level teaching experience, experience in active learning pedagogy, experience teaching and interacting with underserved/disadvantaged student populations, experience in research education pedagogy, and the specific knowledge and skills to design, develop, deliver and report on three research education "courses", "Connecting Life", "Summer Research Institute", and "Reasoning to Research".
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in inquiry-based science, microscopy, and molecular biology, and excellent communication skills.
