Under general direction, assists the research assistant, sr. or other research investigators by performing moderately complex research experimentation following established protocols; This position’s primary responsibility is veterinary assistance in health monitoring, breeding colony management and clinical care of research animals.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in science or related field or equivalent experience; supplemented with experience handling, husbandry and healthcare of rodents. Broad knowledge involving clinical care of research animal techniques and AALAS Certification is preferred.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Examines health of all animals and reports any abnormalities to the veterinarian consistent with established standard operating procedures; provides clinical care under the direction of veterinarians.

Performs the husbandry duties and room maintenance for animal quarantine area(s) (Sentinel Program).

Provides primary technical research assistance and supports research project design; collects, prepares and analyzes lab samples for evaluation.

Leads and trains Lab Animal Technicians; attends and participates in meetings, conferences and training groups.

Performs other duties as assigned.
