Celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2012, Nevada State College is the first and only four year institution in the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE). The School of Education is one of three schools at the college including the School of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the School of Nursing. The School of Education partners with Clark County School District (CCSD) which is the fifth largest school district in the United States to prepare teachers in methods that promote academic success among the 53,000 English learners, 88% of whom speak Spanish. CCSD has a continuum of English learner programs including eight dual language schools.<BR>

Nevada State College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Elementary Education with an emphasis in Literacy and one or more of the following: Second Language Acquisition, Bilingual, and/or Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL), to begin Fall 2013 or Spring 2014. The candidate will teach undergraduate courses in elementary literacy, bilingual and TESL education. Additional faculty duties include working in partnership schools, participating in program and curriculum development including evaluation, supervising students in the field, providing mentoring and support for adjunct faculty, participating in committees, engaging in scholarly work, and advising students. The candidate will have oversight duties of the Elementary Education programs in the School.
Candidates for the position should have an understanding of contemporary theories, models, and best practices associated with literacy and language acquisition as well as be able to use technology for effective student learning. A strong knowledge base of language, literacy, and second language acquisition (Spanish/English) coupled with the ability to prepare educators in how to teach content while facilitating language and literacy acquisition in two languages is critical.<BR>

- Earned doctorate in literacy with emphasis in language and culture or closely related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- Three years K-8 teaching experience in elementary education, bilingual education and/or TESL.
- Demonstrated expertise and knowledge in areas of literacy, culture, and language.
- Interest in partnering with and teaching college courses in the K-12 schools
- Excellent interpersonal skills<LI>Successful experience teaching in higher education.
Offer of employment is contingent upon successful completion of due diligence background check and verification of credentials.
- Ability to prepare and teach a variety of courses leading to state licensure/certification in bilingual education and TESL.
- Fluency in two or more languages, both language and literacy (Spanish/English).
- Successful experience utilizing a variety of technologies in education to promote student success.
- Record of scholarly work.
- Experience in applying for, receiving, and administering grant funded programs.
- Interest in developing and working with international programs for students.
- Active membership in professional associations concerned with literacy, language, and culture.
