RESPONSIBLE TO: AVP, Academic Affairs


The responsibility of the Dean is to provide strategic direction and instructional leadership for the School of Social Sciences and Public Affairs, which consists of the following departments: Social and Human Relations; Philosophy and Communication; History, Culture, and Politics; Education; and Business. Responsibilities include: development of programs and priorities in Academic Affairs, including Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees; articulation agreements with four-year colleges and universities; collaboration with business and industry; maintaining accreditation standards in the programs; providing a positive environment for teaching and learning; and advocating for faculty, students, staff and the various departments. The Dean serves as a representative and advocates for Instruction while working with other senior leaders and department heads across the College and with other institutions in the State.  This position has a high impact on the health of the organization, specifically as it applies to quality instruction and student success.



  • Plan, organize and monitor expenditures of program budgets
  • Develop long term strategies for optimizing learning results from the programs’ financial resources


  • Provide ongoing, current and relevant communications to faculty, staff and students
  • Ensure a positive environment for teaching and learning
  • Conduct performance reviews, observations, and coaching sessions with department chairs and administrative assistant(s), and as needed with faculty and lab staff.
  • Meet regularly with Department Chairs
  • Participate in recruitment, selection, and mentoring of faculty
  • Participate in CWI Curriculum Committee
  • Promote a team effort between deans, department chairs, and faculty
  • Recognize the accomplishments of departments and individuals
  • Monitor enrollment patterns, cost/benefit information, employment and other critical data to identify class schedule opportunities, issues, program development and needed changes
  • Provide leadership and guidance for professional development of faculty and staff
  • Review and evaluate student outcomes assessment results
  • Assist department chairs to initiate corrective action with faculty members and staff
  • Coordinate faculty search committees and make recommendations for new faculty appointments

Leadership and Administration

  • Advocate for faculty, staff, students and other stakeholders in the mission of College of Western Idaho
  • Provide leadership support for curriculum and program development
  • Provide leadership in accreditation and reports
  • Monitor enrollment patterns, cost/benefit information, employment and other critical data to identify class schedule opportunities, issues, program development and needed changes
  • Participate in information planning and marketing of the various departments
  • Advocate and represent the school on committees, councils, and taskforces at the college, local, state, and national level
  • Provide input in setting the college’s educational master plan, mission and purpose
  • Work closely with other managers on the Deans Council
  • Participate in policy formulation related to instructional programs, curriculum development, student development and administrative services
  • Promote teaching and administrative excellence
  • Demonstrate strong and clear commitment to diversity among students, faculty, and staff
  • Mediate student complaints that cannot be resolved at the department chair level.
  • Verify and sign grade changes, independent studies, extensions, overloads and other forms pertinent to student academic matters
  • Investigate and make decisions regarding grade appeals, academic integrity, matriculation of coursework, and student behavioral issues and complaints
  • Ensure that course syllabi and course outlines are current and in compliance with accreditation standards and college expectations
  • Lead and direct initiatives and quality control measures to provide for the continuing accreditation of assigned programs
  • Promote academic freedom as well as academic responsibility


  • Coordinate with appropriate department chairs and administrative staff to develop fall, spring, and summer schedules for relevant CWI locations
  • Assist department chairs with coordination of teaching assignments for faculty
  • Assist department chairs with coordination of lab schedule assignments for staff
  • Monitor enrollment patterns, cost/benefit information, employment and other critical data to identify class schedule opportunities, issues, program development and needed changes

Curriculum Development and Assessment

  • Work with the department chairs and faculty on the design of the curriculum
  • Work with the department chairs and faculty on the development of degree programs
  • Oversee development and use of degree advising grids
  • Design and develop instructional programs appropriate to the College’s goals
  • Explore and implement alternative course delivery options
  • Develop and communicate standards for faculty teaching competence
  • Ensure and support outcomes assessment processes and learning outcomes
  • Lead department chairs in development and analysis of Program and Discipline Review
  • Oversee ongoing program assessment and development of strategies for improvement


  • Build a collaborative spirit with other departments at CWI
  • Work directly with contracts and memoranda of agreement with external agencies
  • Maintain the protection and safe-keeping of confidential data acquired during the course of work
  • Attend meetings of pertinent committees and task forces
  • Implement College academic policies
  • Work cooperatively with Assistant Vice President's staff and College administration.
  • Represent Assistant Vice President's Office at College functions as needed.
  • Represent College to external organizations
  • Convey by words and actions the values expected by CWI
  • Perform other school-specific duties as needed or assigned


  • Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution
  • Experience as a full-time faculty member with a minimum of seven years’ teaching experience
  • Three years equivalent leadership or administrative supervisory experience at the department or division level, or comparable leadership experience
  • Community college experience is preferred. Training or demonstrated experience is preferred in the following areas: human resource management, organizational development, teaching and learning, change management, revenue generation, budgeting, and working with college transfer programs
Salary Range
$71,200 - $85,440
