TITLE/RANK: Southern Illinois University (SIU) Carbondale invites applications for the position of Assistant/Associate General Counsel.
LOCATION: Carbondale, Illinois
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant/Associate General Counsel is charged with providing advice and support to the SIU Board of Trustees, President, and other administrators, faculty, and staff, primarily on the Carbondale campus. The primary responsibilities for this position are to provide legal advice, interpretation, and representation in a broad range of legal issues with a focus on labor matters, including but not limited to representation in grievances, arbitrations, and in cases before the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board, as well as representation of the university before the Civil Service Merit Board; legal advice and representation in public safety matters; and representing the university in forcible entry and detainers cases. Other responsibilities include providing advice and guidance on subpoena responses and matters related to bankruptcy and creditor's rights; service on assigned university committees; reviewing and drafting policies and guidelines; providing review and recommendations regarding various regulatory and compliance matters; and performing other duties as assigned. This position reports to the General Counsel and will be located at the university's Carbondale campus. Occasional travel is required, including, but not limited, to the other university campuses in Edwardsville and Springfield.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS: (a)Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school; (b) at least five (5) years of experience in the licensed practice of law; (c) a strong academic record; (d) excellent oral and written communication skills; (e) exceptional judgment, legal research skills, analytical problem solving abilities, and ability to negotiate; (f) the highest ethical standards, integrity, and trustworthiness; (g) the ability and enthusiasm to work in a team-oriented environment with an emphasis on collaboration; (h) the ability to build and maintain relationships; (i) the ability to manage multiple and changing priorities; (j) and admission to the Bar of the State of Illinois or within three (3) months of appointment to the position. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated experience in areas of labor and employment matters. Prior legal practice in institutions of higher education and/or governmental settings is preferred. Compensation and title (Assistant or Associate General Counsel) shall be commensurate with successful applicant's experience and academic credentials.
