Detailed Job Description

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Facilities and Technology of the Film Scoring Department, the Film Scoring Lab Supervisor is responsible for: The security of all labs during lab times; Instructing students in the proper use and operation of all lab equipment in the Film Scoring Department; Enforcing the Departmental policies concerning student usage of the labs; Assisting the Director of Facilities and Technology in the maintenance/upkeep of labs during school (and between semesters); Continuing the educational process by clarifying class concepts and material in a practical way such as; the individualized instruction of film music editing techniques, assisting in pre-production scoring applications; Hiring, supervising, scheduling and training student employees

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. Advise pre-production and recording preparations thru assistance with various A/V and MIDI synchronization equipment, plus troubleshooting and approval of technical aspects of student projects prior to actual studio sessions
  2. Assist students in the use of Film Scoring computer software programs (Macintosh and IBM computers), and interact with students during computer lab times by offering input about available options and capabilities of current software in completing homework assignments (assisting students in the use of the Berklee Intranet for homework submission to Faculty, or with A/V material access)
  3. Assist students in the final transfer/bounce of their projects to Quicktime or other formats (including CD/DVD burning) prior to screenings or project submission
  4. Communicate with Faculty regarding curricular goals for each Film Scoring course requiring access to Lab facilities, including training/course auditing as required
  5. Ensure security of all equipment in labs, and monitor student check-in/out
  6. Assist the Director of Facilities and Technology in lab equipment maintenance and supply inventory
  7. Supervise work-study students during the evening/weekend hours, and training with any equipment as duties require
  8. Other duties as assigned by Director of Facilities and Technology or Department Chairs

Required Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Music or equivalent
  2. Knowledge in film/video scoring techniques and procedures
  3. Expertise with MIDI Sequencing and Audio Editing (DAW), Video applications, Computers (Macintosh and Windows) and other software applicable to Film Scoring area
  4. Familiarity with the principles of digital audio, including digital media management, archiving and retrieval
