Detailed Job Description

Washington State University (WSU) is seeking to hire a strongly self-motivated, talented Control Systems Engineer (Administrative/Professional Staff) to support the research activities at a first-of-its-kind experimental user facility: The Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory. The DCS constitutes a new paradigm for understanding the dynamic compression and deformation response of materials on under extreme conditions. Real-time, atomistic-scale investigations of condensed matter phenomena can be undertaken in single event experiments through time-resolved, in-situ measurements utilizing the tunable, high energy X-ray capabilities at the APS.

The location for this WSU position is the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois. We are looking to hire an individual who can implement and support custom control systems in a fast-paced, research environment. This position is responsible for implementing and maintaining equipment controls (both hardware and software), as well as instrumentation interfaces for data acquisition and storage.

Responsibilities for this entry level position include, but are not limited to:

  1. Participate in the development and implementation of control systems for a broad range of experimental equipment. Standard hardware platforms and protocols include VME, Allen Bradley PLC, ModBus, Serial, and Ethernet.
  2. Develop and deploy EPICS (Experimental Physics and Industrial Control System) software in support of user operations at DCS.
  3. Conduct maintenance and upgrades for: beamline and equipment controls, custom instrumentation, data acquisition hardware and software, data storage and back-ups, and network hardware and software.
  4. Manage maintenance of Windows servers and Linux workstations, deployment of computers for laboratory usage, and data backup procedures and systems.
  5. Contribute effectively to all aspects of the DCS User Facility; maintaining information system technologies utilized in the experimental facilities; ordering hardware components and software; and working effectively in a team setting.

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and experience performing professional-level work with scientific or engineering research protocols. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Experimental and analytical skills; understanding and knowledge of research theory; excellent organizational and project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in a scientific or engineering environment.
• Working knowledge of EPICS software.
• Working knowledge of Pulsed Power Systems.
• Demonstrated experience in administering Windows servers, as well as Linux and Windows workstations
