The Director of the Office of Community Engagement and Service is responsible for the leadership and strategic direction of community engagement and service programming at Miami University. The Director will leverage the resources of the office to enhance and support the capacity of students, staff, and faculty related to service initiatives and work collaboratively with community partners in achieving mutually beneficial outcomes to address challenges facing communities. The Director will work with faculty in the formation and/or delivery of Service-Learning designated courses. In consultation with other stakeholders, the Director will develop overall strategic and operational scope, including establishment of program policies, incentives, best practices and key partnerships with relevant campus units and external community organizations.

The Office of Community Engagement and Service collaborates with local communities to develop and support sustainable opportunities for enhanced student learning through community engagement. It seeks to foster a campus culture that guides students effectively through community-based experiences and encourages all who serve in the local communities to think critically, understand diverse contexts, reflect and then take purposeful action.


The Director reports to the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs.  The Director supervises the Assistant Director, Capacity Building Coordinators, Program Assistants, and student volunteers/employees.


  • Oversee the development and implementation of programs that foster students' lifelong civic participation by engaging the University with communities through educational programs, workshops, community service, and Service-Learning opportunities
  • Cultivate mutually beneficial partnerships and service-oriented projects that strengthen Miami’s local, state, national and world communities
  • Provide leadership and professional development opportunities for staff consistent with professional goals
  • Serve as a resource to faculty in the formation and/or delivery of Service-Learning designated courses
  • Oversee departmental review process and develop new strategic plan for the office
  • Develop long-range strategic planning and program development, including the assessment of such programs and services, consistent with the universities mission
  • Chair or serve on appropriate University and Divisional committees
  • Recruit, train, supervise and evaluate professional staff members, and a varying number of student employees
  • Develop and maintain a community engagement committee
  • Responsible for fiscal management of departmental operating budget including forecasting expenditures and revenues, maintaining records, and linking program objectives and assessment to the annual budget process
  • Coordinate the preparation of adjustments and supporting documentation for the mid-year and end of the year reports
  • Provide direct supervision to all OCES staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree
  • 5 years of progressive professional (full-time) experience working in student affairs or related Community Engagement organization
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and community constituents
  • 2-3 years’ experience supervising professional staff
  • Strong leadership abilities and excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills
  • Team orientation and inclusive philosophy
  • Personable and relatable to all student populations as well as faculty and staff
  • Demonstrated understanding of the developmental needs of college students
  • Experience working with Community Engagement and Service or Service-Learning
  • Experience developing new programs and services

  • Doctoral Degree in Higher Education or related field
  • Program assessment and evaluation expertise
  • Scholarly interest in educational learning theory, service learning, and community­ based partnership development
