The position of Accessible Technology Specialist acts as a resource for the campus community on the procurement of accessible technology and promotes the campus-wide adoption of and compliance with the Section 508 accessibility requirements.  This position’s focus is to collaborate with university purchasing and the IT Contract & Vendor Management Coordinator to research, develop, evaluate, document, and implement electronic and information technology procurement procedures and policies.   This position will also develop documentation and provide training to university offices on topics related to accessibility and hardware, software, and web application purchases.


1.  Work with representatives from campus departments, as well as external vendors, to evaluate procurement of electronic and information technology (E&IT) products and services recommended for procurement and to route IT procurement requests to other IT professionals or administrative staff as needed.

2.  Facilitate compliance of the university adaptive technology and alternate media services within the general requirements of the ADA, Section 504 and their applicable regulations.

3.  Follow accessibility related standards and laws, including WCAG, ADA Section 504 and WAI-ARIA.

4.  Conduct accessibility testing against WCAG 2.0 success criteria and federal requirements.

5.  Evaluate and makes recommendations regarding the accessibility and compliance with requirements specified in Section 508 and WCAG 2.0 for all applicable IT procurements.

6.  Evaluate training needs as related to accessible technology procurement and other processes; provide direct technical assistance, training, resource materials, and support to staff, as needed.

7.  Research practices, procedures and guidelines for maintaining compliance with federal and state laws as they relate to electronic and information technology procurement from a strategic and operational perspective.

8.  Provide administrative coordination in terms of communication, compliance tracking, and reporting related to university accessible technology requirements.

9.  Collaborate with other campuses on accessibility best practices that pertain to procurement.

10. Work closely and collaboratively with Procurement on various aspects of IT purchases and requirements in adherence with policy and procedures. 

11. Serve as liaison to outside agencies, vendors, or entities related to IT and ATI procurement.

12. Establish effective relationships with external vendors, evaluating accessibility of electronic and information technology (E&IT), and routing IT procurement requests to other professionals or administrative staff as needed.

13. Collaborate with other campuses on accessibility best practices.

14. Work collaboratively with offices such as Student Disability Services, Rinella Learning Center, Academic Departments, E-Learning and the University Libraries to address electronic and information technology accessibility-related challenges for students, staff, faculty, and visitors with disabilities

15. Actively promote a customer-oriented approach throughout IT Services.

16. Participate in professional development activities.

17. May teach an approved one credit hour course per semester on an as needed basis and with division approval.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Require a Bachelor's degree earned by date of hire.

  • 2 years of experience in a related field.

Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience providing the knowledge/skills/abilities listed above may be substituted. Experience in these knowledge/skills/abilities may be earned concurrently.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree or coursework related to students with specific or multiple disabilities; special education; psychology, physical education with an emphasis in adaptive physical education; communicative disorders; rehabilitation; computer -based education; other computer related majors which include course work on adapted or assistive computer technology for students with disabilities
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new tools and technologies and rapidly apply acquired knowledge in a service role.  
  • Experience in evaluating information technology products and services and working with IT product vendors.
  • Experience with software/hardware procurement processes & procedures.  
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct business process analysis leading to IT procurement improvements as relates to accessibility. 
  • Demonstrated experience with accessibility analysis, testing, design and development.
  • Knowledge of and experience with state and national standards and guidelines which apply to equal access to technology and the provision of academic materials in alternate format for students and staff with disabilities.
  • Working knowledge of US ADA Section 504 and Standards published by the World Wide Web Consortium such as WCAG 2.0, ATAG 2.0, UAAG 1.0, WAI-ARIA, and MathML, DAISY Standard and EPUB3
  • Working knowledge & experience with accessibility barriers.
  • Accessibility certifications through organizations such as IAAP (International Association of Accessibility Professionals).
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently, in a team, and with or without direction.
  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.
  • Customer service skills; including diplomatically, patiently, and successfully handling complaints, problems, questions, conflict, and suggestions.
