Parsons The New School for Design
The Assistant Professor should demonstrate expertise in the practice, history and theory of a field of art or design. S/he must show evidence of their innovativeness in their pedagogical approaches and be forward-thinking about what skills and literacies are now required to adeptly respond to complex of global conditions. The Assistant Professor may be expected to teach undergraduate or graduate courses, and students from a variety of disciplines across Parsons. S/he will hold regular office hours, and participate in extracurricular activities on a regular basis (e.g., critiques, review panels, thesis supervision, independent study, Parsons/New School committees, etc.). The faculty is expected to continue to remain current in professional, creative or scholarly work.
Director, Continuing Education
The Assistant Professor will also serve as Director of Continuing Education. The directorship is an 11-month administrative assignment and carries a teaching load of 1-2 courses per year, as determined by the Associate Dean of SPACE. At the end of this administrative assignment, the Assistant Professor will assume full-time teaching and service responsibilities. The Director of Continuing Education, reporting to the Associate Dean of SPACE, will:
- Oversee all Continuing Studies and Adult Education programs and initiatives offered through SPACE.
- Work closely with the Associate Dean of SPACE, Part-time faculty Managers, Senior Director of Part-time Faculty, and the Director of Operations for SPACE.
- Represent SPACE and Parsons at public, internal and external events.
- Initiate outreach to external partners for program development and new initiatives.
- Initiate, develop and support new program models and curricula.
- Manage, recruit and hire part-time faculty and student assistants.
- Manage the Schedule Builder process for Continuing Education.
- Provide professional development opportunities for faculty each year, focused on standard issues like new program information, syllabus planning, assessment, leveraging student portfolios, and new teaching technologies.
- Plan and oversee public programming.
This position is dependent on budget approval from the Office of the Provost.
