Detailed Job Description

The successful candidate will:
• Develop an impactful and well-funded research program focusing on food safety with an emphasis on raw agricultural products and minimally processed foods produced in the Pacific Northwest. The successful candidate is expected to collaborate with basic and applied scientists across the university and region. S/he must be able to integrate research and extension activities to meet the needs of the regional food industry.
• Produce scholarly publications in the area of food safety and disseminate scholarship in appropriate professional forums.
• Provide statewide leadership in food safety through educational programs, publications and technical assistance to a diverse audience of stakeholders.
• Lead extension efforts in food safety. Collaborate with university colleagues at both institutions in extension and outreach efforts in food safety, business development, agriculture, and resource management. Measure, document and report impacts of these programs.
• Develop collaborative relationships with state and federal agencies and other organizations that develop or influence food safety policy.
• Extend the reach of WSU Extension by integrating distance technology into program delivery through web pages, electronic mailing, apps, multimedia technology and other emerging technologies.
• Serve as an advisor or mentor for students, providing them with research and internship opportunities.
• Build capacity to sustain and grow programs through constituent empowerment and/or leadership development.
• Seek opportunities to serve on state, regional and national committees to promote food safety.

Required Qualifications

REQUIRED for both the Assistant and Associate Professor level:
(Successful Associate Professor candidates must currently have Associate Professor status or Assistant Professor status for six or more years)
• Ph.D. in Food Science, Food Microbiology, or a related field at the time of hire.
• Strong academic training in food safety.

Preferred Qualifications

• A minimum of 2 years of experience in food safety related work in a professional setting.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and capacity and willingness to engage diverse constituents in educational and research programs.
• Demonstrated capability to conduct programs that address food safety issues.
• Excellent verbal and written communication with a record of publications commensurate with career level.
• Knowledge of current and emerging food safety issues.
• Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work effectively with individuals and groups with diverse cultures, backgrounds, and ideologies in a global environment.
• Flexibility in exercising both leadership and team building roles to work collaboratively, independently and harmoniously with other people.
• Demonstrated ability to use computer, smart devices, and web-based technologies.
• Demonstrated success in the area of grants, contracts and gift development.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and carry out plans for fee-generating educational activities.

The School of Food Science (SFS) is a unique joint venture integrating food science faculty and educational programs from the University of Idaho (UI) and Washington State University (WSU) into a single unit. The synergies derived from joining resources gives the SFS international impact and recognition. The position location is negotiable between Pullman, Wenatchee, and Prosser, Washington.

The School of Food Science is jointly administered by Washington State University and the University of Idaho, just 8 miles apart.
