The Washington State University (WSU) Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences (VCS) seeks to fill a tenure-track, permanent, full-time, 12-month position within the Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery section of its Veterinary Teaching Hospital. The position is offered at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank, depending upon qualifications, and is available immediately. The position will contribute to a team whose primary mission is teaching, clinical service and scholarship.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach professional veterinary students, interns, residents, and graduate students in didactic (classroom) and clinical setting on topics of small animal orthopedics, diagnostics and general small animal surgery; provide health care and service to patients of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital; advise and consult with referring veterinarians and clients; develop and collaborate in a creative, basic and/or clinically-oriented research program in Small Animal Orthopedic Surgery or an allied field; and provide guidance and consultation for research projects of residents and graduate students. Research interests using canine gait analysis (kinetic, kinematic, and sEMG) with applications for osteoarthritis treatment and/or orthopedic surgery (arthroscopy, fracture healing, etc.) would complement current orthopedic research activities within the Comparative Orthopedic Research Laboratory.
COLLEGE OVERVIEW: The mission of VCS is to serve the community through education and through generation and dissemination of new information, for the benefit of animal and human health and well-being. The WSU College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), http://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/, is organized into four departments: VCS, Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology (VMP), Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience (IPN), and the School of Molecular Biosciences (SMB), each dedicated to excellence in teaching, research and service. The Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health has joined the CVM, adding depth to its teaching, research and service missions. A core clinical research group in individualized medicine has been identified as a research focus within VCS and will provide diverse research opportunities for the applicant interested in genetic relationships to disease.
VETERINARY TEACHING HOSPITAL AND RESEARCH FACILITIES: Our state-of-the-art Veterinary Teaching Hospital provides the latest in advanced diagnostics, including advanced imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI, DXA, intraoperative imaging), linear accelerator-based radiation therapy, arthroscopy, AO-ASIF, external skeletal fixation, interlocking-nail fracture repair instrumentation, and operating microscopes. The advanced modern research facilities located in the Animal Disease and Biotechnology Facility includes gait lab with kinetic, kinematic, and surface EMG capabilities, research surgical suite, sterile biochambers, cold ultra centrifugation, electron microscopy, molecular genetics and transgenic animal facilities.

The candidate must possess a DVM or related degree (such as BVSc) and have credentials accepted by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) before date of hire.
Candidate must be able to communicate effectively, work collegially, and collaborate with diverse internal and external constituencies.
Preferred qualifications include board certification by the ACVS, an advanced degree in veterinary medicine or closely related field, a record of research or scholarly productivity, strong clinical experience and leadership in orthopedic surgery, and evidence of expertise in teaching in a clinical and/or didactic setting.
