Detailed Job Description

Develop a statewide program focused on diagnostics, innovation, management, and issues related to food safety and export to serve the Washington tree fruit industry; work closely with a network of producers, packinghouse managers, extension and research faculty and industry partners to collaborate in applied research, provide educational programs and resources, and diagnose and solve industry problems; this position will function as an integral member of the WSU Tree Fruit Extension Team, work closely with WSU horticulture faculty and WSU plant pathology faculty and will collaborate with scientists at the USDA-ARS Tree Fruit Research Laboratory in Wenatchee, the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission and other relevant public and private partners.

Required Qualifications

M.S. or Ph.D. in Horticulture or related plant sciences discipline with a background in postharvest research and/or management of temperate fruit crops, especially apple, pear and sweet cherry and other stone fruit; ability to travel and work occasional weekend and/or evening hours; must have, or be able to obtain at time for hire, a valid unrestricted driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated skills in creating web- and mobile device-based educational resources; evidence of ability to generate external funding in support of a postharvest fruit program; ability to advise, lead, and mentor staff and student interns; evidence of ability to develop an effective outreach/extension program; evidence of ability to communicate and interact effectively with industry stakeholders.
