The School of Economic Sciences (SES) within the College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resource Sciences (CAHNRS) and the Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Heath (Allen School) in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Washington State University are seeking dynamic, motivated, problem-solving leaders and distinguished researchers. Applications are invited for two full-time, 9-month tenure-track positions: one Assistant or Associate Professor, and one Associate or Full Professor, to begin August 16, 2016, or as negotiated at the Pullman, Washington campus. Successful applicants are expected to develop internationally-recognized research and teaching programs focused on the economics of health and development.
SES and the Allen School have developed a strong foundation for research collaboration among health scientists and economists, with broad international connections and ongoing research programs in East and West Africa, South America, and elsewhere. Economic analysis is crucial to the goals of both schools and is central to the ongoing collaborative research programs. With these positions, WSU will strengthen its commitment to integrated economics and policy studies focusing on global health and economic development in the two Schools.
The successful candidates will each work with both Schools’ Directors, with primary reporting to a single Director. For candidates hired with tenure the specifics of the reporting and tenure home is negotiable. For candidates hired at the Assistant Professor level, the reporting and tenure home will be the School of Economic Sciences.
These positions are both primarily research oriented, with teaching responsibilities. Successful candidates will develop nationally and internationally-recognized economics research programs in the area of health and economic development. Opportunities for emphasis lie primarily around the intersection of human and livestock health and economic development, with priority on livestock-dependent communities in low-income countries. Teaching responsibilities include one to two economics courses per year in the successful applicant’s area of expertise in the SES and the Allen School. The successful applicants will cooperate with internal and external research colleagues to identify research priorities, conduct collaborative projects, and disseminate results by publishing in appropriate scientific journals and peer-reviewed journals. Other duties include, for each position, securing extramural funds to support the program from state, regional and national grant sources; mentoring and advising graduate students; and participating as appropriate in committees, instruction, and other activities of the SES, the Allen School, and WSU.
• Earned Ph.D. in Economics or a related discipline at date of hire.
• Candidate hired as Associate Professor having served at least 6 years as an assistant or equivalent; candidate hired as Full Professor having served at least 6 years as an associate professor or equivalent.
• Evidence of strong training in microeconomic theory and applicable quantitative methods;
• Evidence of excellent communication skills, both written and verbal;
• Record or competitive extramural funding commensurate with career level;
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a nationally and internationally recognized and respected research program at the intersection of the fields of health economics and economic development, with an emphasis on economic development in low income countries and communities and/or livestock-dependent communities and households;
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams; and
• Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at graduate and undergraduate levels.

The WSU School of Economic Sciences (SES) offers highly-rated Ph.D. programs in Economics and Agricultural Economics, an M.S. program in Applied Economics, and B.S. programs that open doors to a variety of career paths. The Paul G. Allen School for Global Animal Health’s (Allen School) (www.globalhealth.wsu.edu) mission is to improve human health and well-being by providing solutions at the animal, human, and environmental interfaces. The Allen School integrates faculty across disciplinary boundaries and seeks to change the status quo of health disparities at a global level. Research programs in the Allen School are focused on the epidemiology, immunology, pathogenesis, genomics and ecology of zoonotic pathogens and antimicrobial resistance and/or pathogens that constrain health and human development in resource poor countries.
