This position is responsible for the operation of high pressure steam boilers, steam turbines, engines, electrical generators and complex auxiliary support equipment in an efficient and safe manner.  

Engineer is directly responsible for the reliable production of steam that provides the University with heat / hot water and indirectly with the production of chilled water for process cooling, refrigeration and air conditioning.  

This position is also directly responsible for the reliable generation of electricity that provides the University with peak power reduction as well as emergency power in the event of regional power outages.  

Engineer remotely monitors operations and alarms from the South Refrigeration Plant, North Chiller Plant and the Geothermal Energy Plant. 


1.  Responsible for the reliable, safe and efficient operation of the Central Power Plant. Operates up to four high pressure boilers, two engine generator sets, and a variety of complex support equipment utilizing various fuel sources simultaneously.  Responsible for operating all equipment in a manner that is compliant with State of Ohio codes for a licensed Stationary Engineer.

2.  Oversee, monitor, and record systems and equipment status and condition.  These functions are performed on-site at the Central Power Plant and remotely for the South Refrigeration Plant, North Chiller Plant and Geothermal Energy Plant.  Monitoring may be performed by visual inspection or through the operation of multiple computers utilizing various SCADA software.

3.  Oversee the Electrical Generation Plant operation and follows predetermined generation operating plans and schedules.

4.  Supervise a Utility Systems Maintenance Specialist on a daily basis.  Supervise and assign tasks to the Utility Systems Maintenance Assistants as needed. Provide instruction and guidance to assist Specialist in the state licensing process.

5.  Work with and provide technical support for outside contractors working in or on the Central Power Plant.

6.  Manage a variety of emergency situations, possibly simultaneously, to prevent bodily injury or loss of campus heat, electric power, hot water, chilled water, plant or equipment integrity with minimal to no assistance or supervisory support.

7.  Troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment to determine and make necessary repairs and inform supervisor of the appropriate action(s) taken.

8.  Review and complete work orders pertaining to preventative maintenance, repair or system training on a variety of complex mechanical and electro-mechanical equipment in the Central Power Plant.  Similar work may be performed on steam, hot water and chilled water distribution systems or in the South Refrigeration Plant, North Chiller Plant or Geothermal Energy Plant if deemed appropriate by the supervisor.

9.  Make recommendations to supervisor regarding improved operating methods and efficient procedures for a variety of equipment including but not limited to high pressure boilers, engine generator sets, and auxiliary equipment.

10.  Observe strict safety rules and housekeeping practices in performing assigned duties and maintaining work areas.  Maintain tools and equipment in a clean and serviceable condition.  Follow established University policies and procedures and standard operating procedures while maintaining and repairing boilers, generators, chillers and auxiliary support equipment.

11.  Assist in developing and maintaining standard operating procedures and preventative and predictive maintenance procedures.

12.  Monitors operations; monitors and records functions status and conditions; makes any necessary adjustments; handles emergency situations.

13.  Oversees staff; establishes schedules and assigns tasks; serves as informational resource.

14.  Fills out and maintains records of all EPA required forms; fills out and maintains work logs.

15.  Fires up, shuts down, and operates boilers and other auxiliary machinery.

16.  May research cost and availability of items; may make purchasing decisions.

17.  May assist with the removal and disposal of hazardous waste.

18.  Performs routine maintenance on boilers; makes any necessary repairs.

Minimum Qualifications

-This position requires a minimum of a third class Stationary Engineer’s License in the State of Ohio. 

-Twelve to eighteen months training beyond high school or a minimum of three years operating experience in boiler, generator and auxiliary support equipment operation is required.  

-A valid driver’s license is required.

-General knowledge of computers is also required.  

-This position demands working a variety of shifts on a continuous rotation.  

-The ability to communicate both verbally and in written word with all levels of maintenance and operating personnel, outside utility providers, vendors and contractors is required.

-The applicant must be able to work in a demanding environment that may be dirty, wet, hot or cold.  Physically able to climb ladders, work at heights, within confined spaces, lift heavy objects up to 50 pounds all to support a 24/7 industrial operation.

Preferred Qualifications

-Knowledge and experience in the maintenance and operation of chillers, engines, generators and boilers are highly desirable.  

-Advanced experience in SCADA systems operations, troubleshooting and maintenance is desirable.
