Detailed Job Description
The Baseball/Softball Field Manager is responsible for all day to day operations, maintenance, report and agronomic programming of The University of Alabama athletic properties with specific focus on the baseball and softball fields.
Additional Department Summary:
The Baseball/Softball Field Manager is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operation of UA grounds equipment and irrigations systems. Employee is responsible for noting the daily conditions of the fields and reporting changes to their supervisor. Employee must be able to read, understand, and follow labels for pesticide applications. Employee will work directly with the baseball and softball programs to coordinate a work schedule around events, practices, and games. Employee must be aware of equipment inventory and schedule usage of shared equipment within the scope of the entire IA sports turf maintenance program. The Baseball/Softball Field Manager is responsible for the preparation, layout, and painting of all field markings and decorations in accordance with NCAA and SEC rules. Employee must be detailed oriented and organized to document and record cultural practices, weather events, and field usage. Employee must be able perform these tasks with a minimum amount of supervision from the Director of Sports Grounds.
Required Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience; OR Associates Degree in Sports Turfgrass Management and a minimum of two (2) years of experience with a Minor League Baseball and/or NCAA Division 1 baseball or softball team.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications:
Demonstrated ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions. Demonstrated ability to meet the physical demands of the job including lifting 50 lbs., loading to the height of a truck bed; walking one mile unassisted and uninterrupted; and near continuous standing. Demonstrated ability to work overtime, sometimes on a short notice. Demonstrated intermediate mechanical skills to maintain equipment, irrigation systems, and perform routine building maintenance. Have or acquire (within six (6) months) Alabama sprayers certification/license for turf. Valid U.S. driver's license. Must be at least 21 years of age and have an acceptable motor vehicle report as determined by the insurance carrier.
Skills and Knowledge:
Demonstrated ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions. The Baseball Softball Person must be capable of working independent of supervision on a variety of tasks within a given day. The position is required by its nature to be familiar with the operation and repair of many different types of power equipment related to the care of athletic fields. The Baseball Softball Person will be required to make repairs and adjustments to the irrigation systems installed on the IA fields. The Baseball Softball Person will be called upon to read and understand the labeling of fertilizers and pesticides and make precise applications of fertilizer and pesticides. The Baseball Softball Person must demonstrate a high attention to detail to all areas of the job in order to provide the safety and aesthetic quality that is required. Must be familiar with the strategies and rules that affect the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields will have on the playability of the fields in all types of weather. Must be flexible in order to respond to the needs and requirements of the athletic department. Often the Baseball Softball Person will be called upon to recognize and solve problems without benefit of direct supervision.
Leadership responsibilities in a sports turf manager position. Prefer a 4 year degree in Turf Grass Management Based on Qualifications
