Detailed Job Description

Teach undergraduate and graduate design/product development courses on topics of apparel product development, flat patterning and design, technical design and functional apparel design and collaborate with colleagues to improve course curriculum that brings together understanding of functional apparel in athletic and health related context. Develop a productive independent research program leading to refereed (i.e., peer-reviewed) scholarship and extramural grants, conduct research in the development and application of materials and products in the active wear market complementing existing AMDT faculty in developing a critical mass for advancing research in bio-mechanical and health aspects such as wear testing, mobility testing, injury prevention and safety. Advising graduate student research, mentoring student activities and organizations, and serving the university, college, department and professional organizations. As part of a closely- knit teaching team of seven tenure-track faculty and three instructors, the faculty will provide high quality research, teaching, mentoring, and support to produce “job-ready on day one” students in the textile and apparel industry.

Required Qualifications

Earned Ph.D. degree in the area of Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles with an emphasis on product development/design at the date of offer.

Candidates at Associate Professor level must have served at least 6 years as an Assistant Professor or equivalent at the date of offer. Required for Associate rank with tenure: Record of research productivity commensurate with rank.

Demonstrated ability to secure extramural grant funding.

Demonstrated record in training graduate students.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to teach in one or more of the following areas: apparel product development, flat patterning and design, technical design and functional apparel design.

Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships and contribute to team endeavors.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in oral and written formats.

Demonstrated evidence of proficiency in apparel design and product development.

Demonstrated evidence of obtaining extramural grants.

The Department of Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles (AMDT) at Washington State University has a passion for textiles and apparel. We are seeking a skilled and experienced individual who shares that passion and wants to be part of an energized and growing program at one of the leading universities in the U.S. We have an opening for a full-time, tenure-track, assistant or associate professor to join our teaching and research team on a 9-month appointment, located in Pullman, WA. This position will enhance the department’s position in the area of apparel product development and design with an emphasis on active sportswear and health.

The department works closely with the AMDT Advisory Board to develop industry-relevant educational opportunities and research programs. Members include representatives from Nike, Nordstrom, Speedo, Eddie Bauer, REI, New Fashion Products, Cotton Incorporated, and Konjo Ababa.

The Department of Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles (AMDT) at WSU is the only state-supported four-year university offering a full apparel design program and an in-depth merchandising program in Washington State.

AMDT is part of the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences and supports more than 270 undergraduate students.

Students select either Apparel Design or Merchandising as degree options. The program offers a B.A., M.A., and opportunities to participant in an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program.
