THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA/PICKENS COUNTY HEALTH CARE TEACHING COUNTY PARTNERSHIP seeks to provide
sustainable health resources for the rural county and “real world” training for UA students. The University of Alabama/Pickens Co. Health Care Teaching County Partnership seeks recent UA graduates who are interested in one-year fellowships. These fellowships will provide an opportunity for graduates to serve in a health-related capacity in a community setting to both provide a year of service while expanding their experience and education. For some fellows, this will be a “gap year” experience before graduate school, medical school, or while deciding on future career directions.


The University of Alabama/Pickens Co. Health Care Teaching County Partnership seeks recent UA graduates who are interested in a one-year fellowship. These fellowships will provide an opportunity for new graduates to work in a health-related capacity in a community setting in Pickens County to both provide then with a year of service while expanding their experience and education. For some fellows, this will be a “gap year” experience before graduate school, medical school, or while deciding on future career directions. During the fellowship, a majority of the individual’s time would be spent working in and with the community, plus fellows will spend a day weekly or bi-weekly in leadership development to include a seminar series on health and public policy, leadership skills, and social and cultural determinants of health. Fellows will also be expected to participate in a year-end evaluation of the program.

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree in premed, nursing, social work, nutrition, psychology, health education, business, communications or another discipline that relates to health and/or community engagement.

Travel to and through Pickens County will be expected of each fellow.

Applicants are encouraged to have an identified UA faculty member mentor/collaborator, and/or a Pickens County community organization collaborator. An area of interest or focus for the prospective Fellow, and preliminary communications with UA and Pickens collaborators in advance of applying will be helpful but is not required to apply.

This program consists of a commitment of up to one-year, . The program will make effort to accommodate fellows seeking and starting new academic programs for Fall/Spring of 2017.
