Assistant or Associate Professor of Social Work – Tenure Track
(Two faculty positions effective 8/16/2016)
The University of Alabama School of Social Work invites applications for two tenure track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The positions are nine-month, full time, 1.0 FTE academic appointments scheduled to begin August 16, 2016. Responsibilities involve teaching (online and face-to-face), research (including sponsored research), scholarly activities, advising and service. Faculty hired into these positions will have the opportunity to teach across our three programs (e.g., BSW, MSW [online and traditional], and PhD).
We seek talented and innovative scholars who are actively engaged in research and will bring depth to their teaching of courses, and service to the university, community and profession. As a community of knowledge builders, we are looking for productive and creative colleagues who, through their scholarship, research and teaching, bring new perspectives to the synthesis of practice, policy, theory and research.
Applicants must have an earned Doctorate in Social Work/Social Welfare or related discipline (e.g., education, human development/family studies, or public health) and a MSW with a minimum of two years post MSW practice experience. However, ABD’s will be considered who meet the position qualifications and include in their application materials a letter from their chair confirming a scheduled date of defense prior to the position start date. Candidates must have a good record of scholarship commensurate with their level of academic experience, which includes published research in refereed professional journals and/or books. We are strongly invested in recruiting colleagues who, in their practice and research, demonstrate experience with, knowledge of and sensitivity to the needs of culturally diverse and underrepresented populations and communities. Applicants should have an interest and expertise in reaching our diverse student body through online education.
Applicants with a track record of grant writing and/or sponsored projects, demonstrated competence in teaching face-to-face and online, and recent practice experience will be given extra consideration. Although all substantive areas will be considered, we are interested in applicants who have expertise in the areas of health and health disparities, mental health, policy, and other areas of expertise that fit curriculum demands and advance the standing of the School.
School of Social Work
The University’s School of Social Work, established in 1966, has an accomplished faculty of 19 tenured and tenure-track faculty, 15 full-time teaching faculty and 17 dedicated professional and support staff. The School has a long-standing internship program in Washington, DC and several international initiatives in locations including China, Brazil, Hong Kong, Mexico and soon Cuba. The school enjoys good relationships with federal, state and local social service, health and educational agencies and institutions. We have a strong and vibrant alumni community.
Faculty have excellent support for research and teaching, including state of the art computing equipment, multi-media classrooms, workload credit for research, a School of Social Work Office of Research and opportunities to work with nationally prominent research colleagues.
