As a key member of the Student Academic Success team, the Student Success Specialist for Immigrant Services is responsible for assisting the Coordinator of Immigrant Services in providing comprehensive academic support services to non-native English speaking (NNS) students served by the Student Academic Success Center (SASC) in the Immigrant Services Program (ISP). These services include but are not limited to advising, student development, and outreach to faculty, staff and various campus constituents. The specialist will participate in various progressive activities designed to support enrollment and retention initiatives within the Immigrant Services Program, the SASC,Student Persistence and the University.
(70%) Support Services:
Support Services include advising/coaching, assistance with class registration, career planning, referrals to appropriate resources both on-campus and externally, assistance with financial aid forms, applications/appeals, goal/future planning, encouraging students to participate in campus activities, academic guidance, and tracking of academic progress. This position will promote, support, and participate in multicultural and diversity initiatives to positively impact enrollment, student retention, and graduation rates. This position will also assist in ongoing evaluation and assessment of student learning outcomes. Provide services to non-native English speaking students and to provide counseling and informational sessions to Spanish-speaking students and parents as needed.
(5%) Outreach, Committees, and Advocacy:
The ISP Specialist will be responsible for staying current on immigrant/refugee groups,as well as various ethnic groups and their needs and backgrounds. This position is also responsible for staying current with immigration status issues at the local, state, and federal levels, and community services for refugees and immigrants. In addition, the specialist position requires to stay up to date with information relevant to the student population served by the Immigrant Services Program as well as course catalog changes. Participation on committees as appropriate and approved by the Coordinator of ISP to assist in the development of comprehensive and across-campus retention initiatives to support student success.
(20%) Provide support to programs within SASC and Student Persistence, including but not limited to Summer Bridge and Scholar Success. Assist and support comprehensive enrollment and retention management initiatives.
(5%) Perform additional duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in education, human behavior, counseling, linguistics or other closely related field.
At least two years of post graduate experience working with students or clients in education.
Experience advising/counseling diverse populations.
Error free written communication skills.
Two years of post graduate experience working with immigrant and/or refugee groups in higher education
At least one year of professional experience working in a student retention program in higher education
At least 1 year professional experience teaching, tutoring, or direct support of international students, immigrants, or refugees
Knowledge of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival), ASSET (Advancing Students for a Stronger Economy Tomorrow), and policies impacting immigrant, refugees and undocumented students in order to adequately and effectively serve the academic needs of these student populations and to provide effective and factually correct counseling.
Written and oral fluency in Spanish.
Experience conducting evaluation or assessment.
