Senior Computational Social Sciences Specialist

Are you interested in guiding key decisions around Northwestern's computational and digital support for Social Sciences research? Are you skilled in text, data, or statistical analysis? Do you have experience using cloud-based software delivery? Northwestern is looking for an experienced, self-driven, analytical, and strategic Sr Computational Social Sciences Specialist.

Job Summary:

Under minimal direction, the Senior Computational Social Sciences Specialist is responsible for supporting computational research in the social sciences and related fields through active development of relationships with Northwestern researchers and staff. In this role, you will develop end user skills, tools, and platforms for statistics, data analytics, text analysis, data visualization, network analysis, and/or other areas of social data analytics. In addition, you will lead the development of cloud-based solutions to support research in the social sciences in collaboration with Northwestern IT, library, and school IT colleagues. As an integral member of Research Computing Services, you will lead training efforts through consultation and workshop development for Northwestern faculty and students.

Specific Responsibilities:

Service Support and Onboarding:

  • Work closely with research groups to understand their research goals and provide computational and data workflow solutions.
  • Provide technical and user support for use of research-related software packages and tools, including management of central resources.
  • Serve as a critical role to drive the design and implementation for cloud-based solutions (computing, storage, SaaS, PaaS).
  • Communicate progress and results to researchers, team members, and the IT@NU community effectively and regularly.

Partnership Development:

  • Identify and develop relationships with researchers and staff to facilitate collaborations, understand new research trends, and improve existing support.
  • Assist faculty and staff in drafting of reports, scientific papers, and grant proposals for sections pertaining to computational resources and data analysis.
  • Gather requirements for recommended or needed improvements.

Community Development and Training:

  • Train and educate graduate students, research staff, and faculty on utilizing available resources for computing, software, storage, and data visualization, including local, cloud, and national resources (e.g. XSEDE).
  • Provide training and consulting for conducting statistical analyses using standard software and tools.
  • Create and update documentation on resources, tools and data management practices.
  • Identify and organize new workshops, community events, and training programs for research computing tools and services.
  • Represent NU Research Computing at campus meetings, internal IT meetings, meetings with senior administrators, external conferences, etc.


  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in statistics, informatics, computer science, engineering, or a related field; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge in use of cloud-based solutions, such as SaaS, PaaS, computing, and/or storage.
  • Ability to perform software installation and verification on a Linux cluster.
  • Demonstrated skills in project management.
  • Prefers working in a collaborative, cross-team capacity.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate technical details to non-technical audience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in design and implementation of cloud-based solutions, such as SaaS, PaaS, computing, and storage.
  • Experience in creating user guides, documentation, and/or training materials.
  • Masters or PhD in statistics, informatics, computer science, engineering, or a related field.
