Under general direction, the NMR Lab Manager is responsible for the effective operation of the NMR laboratory and the 700 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) instrument. The NMR Lab Manager handles all functions of the NMR instrument, including recruiting faculty and students to utilize the laboratory, consulting with users regarding experimental methods, and assisting users throughout the research process. The NMR Lab Manager is responsible for maintaining the instrument and ensuring it is operational at all times. The NMR Lab Manager develops and implements the budget for the lab and administers lab fees.
Academic background and experience in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy
Moderate to advanced understanding of the practical and theoretical aspects of NMR
Ability to set up, optimize, and troubleshoot NMR experiments, and process and analyze data
Knowledge of administrative, budgetary, and financial principles and practices
Advanced ability to think creatively and independently on concepts requiring advanced analytic skills
Knowledge of laboratory processes, techniques, and terminology
Interpersonal/human relations skills
Verbal and written communication skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
Ability to exercise sound judgment
A Ph.D. in Chemical Biology or a related field is required. Previous experience using NMR instruments and running an NMR facility is required.
Performs routine maintenance on the 700 MHz NMR; refills cryogens; frequently interacts with manufacturer to optimize machine function; and places service calls to manufacturer when necessary.
Educates potential users regarding the benefits and capabilities of the NMR instrument; trains faculty, staff, and students to use the NMR instrument; assists users with experimental design, implementation, data analysis, and interpretation; provides technical support to all users; and serves as primary contact for all questions and inquiries regarding the NMR instrument.
Develops and maintains budget for the lab; performs administrative duties necessary for budgetary purposes; and determines and administers user fees to secure funding for laboratory functions and instrument maintenance.
Provides expert knowledge regarding the NMR instrument to faculty and students during the grant submission process; and assists faculty and students with articulation of NMR instrument functions and abilities for grant proposals.
Performs other duties as necessary.
