The Director of Admission leads Bates’ admission team in the recruitment, selection, and enrollment of all prospective students. The director oversees the Office of Admission and supervises all Admission professionals in order to maximize staff effectiveness related to job responsibilities, all of which are tied to Bates’ strategic enrollment goals and initiatives. The director travels extensively to create greater visibility and brand recognition for Bates and Bates Admission. Most importantly, the director is a team player who leads the Office of Admission with energy and enthusiasm driven by a shared vision and passion for Bates and its continuing role as an institution of international prominence. In collaboration with the Dean of Admission and Financial Aid and the Director of Student Financial Services, the director is an integral player in one of Bates’ most visible leadership and management groups, both externally and internally.
Essential Job Functions:
Represent Bates' institutional mission and educational philosophy to constituencies both on and off campus.
Set annual strategic admission goals in consultation with the Dean of Admission and Financial Aid. Incorporate college-wide goals and initiatives along with market-driven and data-driven analysis into multi-year admission recruitment, selection, and yield goals.
Manage admission deans, counselors, and professional office staff. Provide leadership, training, and coaching for a Bates Admission Team characterized by an energetic, innovative, principled, compassionate, and customer service-oriented work ethic, while balancing the understanding of both the macro and micro details of admission work.
Lead Bates Admission in greater efforts to establish sound, data-driven recruitment and yield travel strategy for each geographic region.
In collaboration with the Dean of Admission and Financial Aid, strategically develop, lead, and drive diversity enrollment for Bates Admission, with a clear commitment to the institution’s recruitment of underrepresented and underserved students. Enhance and support the mission-driven philosophy and practice that all Bates Admission staff are members of an intentional and broad-reaching diversity enrollment team.
Collaborate with associate dean colleagues in the oversight of all admission communications. Oversee analysis and determine the effectiveness of all admission outreach communications.
Collaborate with associate dean colleagues in the management of application reading and the entire selection process.
Collaborate with associate deans in the implementation of an annual comprehensive yield plan.
Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Admission and Financial Aid.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND ROLES:
Member of Bates’ President’s Council
Member of NACAC, NESCAC, College Board, and Expendables. Attend respective conferences annually.
Travel approximately eight to twelve weeks per year for recruitment and yield efforts.
Teamwork: Lead and contribute whole-heartedly to the overall positive morale of the office and collaborate with admission colleagues and others across the college for the overall benefit of Bates.
Professional Development: Participate in a minimum of one week of professional development activities annually, attend designated conferences and share and integrate learnings/findings with admission colleagues.
Interpersonal: Create and maintain superb relations with the general public along with Bates staff, faculty, students, families and alumni.
Communication Skills: Continually seek opportunities to represent Bates, demonstrating disciplined thinking and highly developed oral and written communication skills.
Technology Skills: Routinely assess electronic communications and data processing best practices, while maintaining fluency in Banner, Banner Document Management System, Hyperion, ARGOS, Slate and other emerging programs.
Assessment: Facilitate and complete annual performance development for all admission staff.
Admission Liaison: Serve as primary office contact for Advancement, Athletics, Bates Communications Office, Dean of Students, Human Resources and other appropriate faculty and college-wide task forces and committees.
Required: Bachelor's degree. At least 10 years of experience in admission or related field with evidence of progressively increased responsibility is desired. Experience working with a complex set of project requirements in a high-paced, high-quality environment. Must be able to travel and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Preferred: Master's degree. Experience with technology and affiliations with related national and regional admission associations.
A successful candidate will have excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as superb interpersonal skills. The Director of Admission must be a results-driven leader and team player, who is well-organized, self-motivating, able to balance multiple priorities, and approaches admission work with passion and integrity.
