Reporting to the Provost and Executive Vice-President for Academic Affairs, the Assistant Provost leads a team of six and provides support to the Provost, deans, department chairs and faculty on academic personnel matters. The Assistant Provost works collaboratively on faculty and academic staff recruitment, appointment, employee relations, compensation, performance evaluation, and conflict resolution. The Assistant Provost also serves as a subject matter expert in interpreting and developing faculty personnel policies and procedures.
The Assistant Provost must demonstrate respect for all employees and for shared-governance processes. The Assistant Provost must respect Miami’s history, traditions and culture while challenging Academic Personnel Services to be more nimble, and move quickly and efficiently. The Assistant Provost must interact effectively with a diverse community of faculty and academic administrators using diplomacy, tact and flexibility in various circumstances, and build collaborative relationships with administrators in the Office of Human Resources, Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity, and other University support functions.
The Assistant Provost must make informed and sound decisions based on data and statistics as well as an understanding of the University and its culture. To adapt successfully to the Miami culture, the Assistant Provost will need to build collaborative relationships across the University and should possess the following attributes:

The Assistant Provost reports to the Provost & Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Office of Academic Personnel Services provides support to the Provost, deans, department chairs and faculty on academic affairs and academic personnel matters.
With support of a staff of six, the Assistant Provost assists with faculty and academic staff recruitment, on-boarding and retention; processes faculty appointments and evaluations, promotion and tenure, academic staff performance evaluations; and is responsible for leadership training; employee relations; compensation; compliance; leave policies; and conflict resolution. In addition to the above responsibilities, the Assistant Provost serves as the subject matter expert in developing and interpreting faculty personnel policies and procedures.
The following key objectives have been identified to measure, in part, the Assistant Provost’s performance:
Master’s degree in human resources, personnel management and leadership, or related human resources field, or business administration; and a minimum of five years of professional experience in higher education..
Experience in progressively more responsible and larger roles in a large university, knowledgeable of best practices in the administration of academic affairs and academic personnel services, and staff supervision.
