The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology, of the State University of New York, invites nominations and applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in the Advertising and Marketing Communications Department of the Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology.

The Jay and Patty Baker School of Business and Technology educates students for management and leadership roles within the fashion and related creative industries. Our curricular integrates a deep appreciation of how markets, business environments, advanced business technology and competition can be managed in a global context. The Baker School provides a professional faculty and business climate that enables students to be immediately valuable contributors to their industries.

The Baker School of Business and Technology collaborates with both the School of Art and Design, and the School of Liberal Arts, whose courses help students to better understand themselves, others, and their place in an increasingly complex world. The Baker School co-operates to design curricular and educational experiences that help hone general skills and behaviors that employers increasingly demand: critical thinking and problem solving skills, a strong sense of professional and ethical responsibility, social skills, the ability to work productively in teams, and good oral and written communications skills.

The vision of the School is to be the most academically recognized school of excellence where students come to learn about the business of the core industries that we serve, the creative, fashion and design industries, and where industry, government and associations see creative alliances for the development of ideas, solution innovation, future thinking, and problem solving.

The mission of the Advertising and Marketing Communications program is to prepare students for success in careers within the marketing communications field and its related industries. The program offers education in the development communication solutions addressing marketing problems. The program includes advertising, public relations, sales promotion, social media and direct marketing. The thrust of the curriculum is that of integrated marketing communication, having all elements integrate to create more impactful and consistent message. The program emphasizes the need for students to work both individually and in teams in a mature and collegial manner. Alumni of the Advertising and Marketing Communications program enter a number of different fields validating the integrated aspects of the curriculum.

Job Description:

The ideal candidate should have international experience and be able to relate that experience in a meaningful way to the students. The candidate should be highly organized with teaching/training preferred. By the nature of his/her industry position, critical thinking skills should be highly developed with the candidate having the ability to enhance this skill in students. The candidate should have high level industry connections which will bring the industry to the classroom through industry speakers, student networking and industry-based assignments. The candidate should have superior understanding of Microsoft Office tools and how these tools can be used as both a business and a teaching tool.

With regard to scholarship, the Department seeks an individual with the ability to be a significant contributor in the field of scholarship relating to promotion of the Advertising and Marketing Communications program, and bringing a degree of recognition through such endeavors that promote the Baker School of Business and Technology as a leader in the fashion and related industries as well as the general advertising and communications field(s).

The candidate must demonstrate ability and experience in teaching, training, or instruction along with the desire to inspire and mentor students. The successful candidate will teach specialty classes in the major, and will teach Advertising and Marketing Communications courses to the other majors serviced by the Department. The new faculty member will be an integral part of implementing strategic goals for the Department's program, and will participate in administrative activities as necessary.

  • Design classroom and other learning activities that foster critical thinking problem solving, information literacy skills and creativity.
  • Maintain connection to industry that allows integration of professional practice with classroom learning.

Learning Enrichment

  •  Embrace new forms of pedagogy (online teaching, blended classes, experiential learning).
  •  Possess the ability to utilize a variety of instructional techniques to improve student learning.
  •  Teach students how to synthesize information to develop critical thinking skills
  •  Develop expertise in multiple areas over one's career as disciples and industry change.


  • Create and maintain a network of alumni and industry experts who can be called upon as resources for course and curriculum development, focus groups, guest speakers, internships and placement opportunities for students.
  • Demonstrate understanding and mastery of established and emerging industry practices and their importance to FIT graduates.
  • Maintain positive, helpful, supportive, respectful, collegial and team-oriented relationships with professionals.
  • Model professional behavior that prepares students for entry into a profession.


  • Demonstrate effective use of technology and electronic information to deliver course material and learning experiences to students.
  • Effective uses technology and electronic information to enhance one's professional productivity in the fields of communication research, industry collaboration and problem solving.
  • Appropriately uses technology to communicate with and engage students in learning outside the classroom.

Master's degree and ten (10) years executive level experience with a strong international component, a proven track record of leadership and innovation. Superior communications a must and computer literacy required in business and classroom applications.

College teaching preferred.
