Position: Academic Advisor, full-time Administrative/Professional appointment, College of Liberal Arts, Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Position is conditional on available funding.

Appointment Date: As soon as possible.

Responsibilities: This position will provide academic advising to all majors in the School of Music. Academic advising includes assisting students with the audition process, theory placement process, tracking students through the music core, understanding credit transfer policies, the curriculum and making appropriate academic decisions, analyzing and interpreting student's transcripts and placement results, advising students about degree requirements including CORE curriculum and college-level requirements, appropriate academic course loads, and course selection. Participates in new student and transfer orientations, provides support in organizing major advising and registration programs, provides academic advising workshops and collaborates with the College of Liberal Arts Advising Office. This position will also research, locate, identify and recruit talented students that will support the department's mission and strategic plan. Recruiting activities include attending state and regional recruiting events that focus on music and the fine arts, visiting high schools; attending college nights; visiting community colleges, coordinating entrance auditions, attending off campus auditions, and acting as a liaison between the prospective student and the appropriate faculty.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree
  • Experience (1 year) in academic advising and/or recruiting within a college setting
  • Demonstrated ability in Word, Excel, email and similar software applications to produce written correspondence, create and maintain spreadsheets
  • Demonstrated ability to work with students, staff, and faculty
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to accomplish tasks and projects

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with a large student database system
  • Background in music or music education

Working Conditions: Duties are performed primarily in an office setting. Variation in working hours should be expected, such as some evening and weekend work, and travel. Incumbent must be able to meet the physical demands of remaining at the workstation for extended periods of time.
