Synopsis of Role:

The Faculty Training Developer (FTD) is a comprehensive learning and performance professional. The incumbent is a primary member within the academics department. This role designs and develops rapid e-Learning solutions to meet the professional development demands of the academics department. The FTD develops performance-based training with an outcomes assessment focus on not just knowledge acquisition, but also behavior and skills development, and improvement centered on achieving institutional key performance indicators and demonstrating return on investment (ROI). The incumbent provides performance consulting to determine appropriate training solutions to address training needs. This role is responsible for instructional design and development of stand-alone rapid e-Learning solutions, instructor-led asynchronous and synchronous training workshops, and job and learning aids. The FTD researches and develops training designed to introduce and develop effective facilitation techniques and best practices related to the American Public University System (APUS) Learning Management System (LMS) and teaching pedagogy. The incumbent also conducts training for new faculty candidates and evaluates their performance during the training and probation phase. Additionally, this role facilitates training as required based on the requirements of APUS and directed by the associate vice president of the center for teaching and learning (CTL).

Essential Functions:

• Performs e-Learning instructional design (e.g., SME knowledge transfer, research, curriculum, scripts, scenario/branching, etc.).

• Performs e-Learning content development that is 508 compliant using tools such as the Adobe Creative Cloud, Captivate, Articulate, Camtasia, Kaltura, etc. to create interactive eLearning assets, video, audio, and graphics.

• Facilitates instructor-led asynchronous, synchronous, and blended e-Learning workshops.

• Researches, develops, builds, and conducts faculty development workshops that strengthen APUS faculty members’ understanding and abilities to teach in online and mobile environments.

• Prepares faculty to effectively use teaching and learning strategies that leverage the capabilities of the APUS LMS and various mobile devices.

• Consistently models best practices in online higher learning instruction as a faculty candidate training course instructor to include: ensuring classes are prepared for instruction; monitoring candidates’ progress; guiding forum discussions and grading course assignments; providing one-on-one, individualized training if needed; and, resolving course and candidate issues.

• Assists in making revisions, improvements, and additions to the faculty candidate training course and to professional development workshops, to include developing and writing faculty development courses and/or lessons.

• Conducts independent course reviews of both undergraduate and graduate courses.

• Facilitates small faculty focus group sessions.

• Conducts live webinars or briefings for faculty at the direction of the AVP of the CTL.

• Contributes to planning and executing new CTL programs and developing new faculty training assets and resources, to include creating new professional development workshops that focus on teaching and learning in a mobile environment.

• Assists with managing and editing the faculty section of the CTL website and makes regularly scheduled contributions to the CTL blog page.

• Pulls data and creates reports, metrics, graphs, etc., to assist the associate vice president of the CTL and others as needed.

• Performs other duties as assigned.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

• Standard office environment in Charles Town, WV.

• Remote work may be performed, as directed by management.

• Work requires high speed access to the Internet at all times, including when off-site.

• Some travel may be required within the Unites States, primarily to the Washington D.C. and Charles Town, WV areas.


Required Skills:

• Demonstrated skills in e-Learning instructional design.

• Demonstrated e-Learning content development.

• Proven online training/facilitation skills (e.g., instructor-led asynchronous, synchronous, and blended eLearning).

• Demonstrated experience developing web-based, mobile-ready, multimedia content and learning assets.

• Proficient in the use of computers and office software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with the ability to prepare accurate spreadsheets and graphs using numerical data.

• Knowledge of 508 compliance requirements.

• Demonstrated background of utilization of best practices in online higher education learning.

• Understanding of effective adult learning principles and practices in an online environment.

• Experience with best practices in developing faculty professional development modules/events/activities.

• Ability to facilitate small and large group training and development sessions and live webinars or briefings.

• Knowledge of APUS policies, procedures, organizational structure, and mission/vision.

• Excellent customer service skills.

• Strong organizational and administrative skills.

• Strong problem-solving, critical-thinking, and independent decision-making skills.

• Effective verbal and written communication, to include basic editing experience.

• Ability to manage multiple projects under tight deadlines.

• Ability to build rapport with faculty candidates, co-workers, faculty directors, program directors, and deans.

Required Experience:

• Master’s degree required; Doctorate degree preferred.

• Minimum two years' online teaching experience in higher education required.

• Sakai (or another online learning platform) experience required.

• Knowledge of 508 compliance requirements required.

• Multimedia experience related to teaching and learning required; experience with Articulate Studio/Presenter, Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Camtasia, Kaltura, and the Adobe Creative Cloud tools preferred.
