Detailed Job Description

This position reports to the Dean of the School of Letters, Arts and Sciences (LAS) who, in turn, reports to the Provost/Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs. This position works in conjunction with the three other LAS Associate Deans. Those reporting to this position include the LAS Arts Advisor.

This position works to promote, facilitate and advocate for the arts at MSU-Denver. The position works closely with the Dean of Letters, Arts and Sciences and the Departments of Art, Music and Theatre, and the Center for Visual Art. This Associate Dean will support and advocate for these programs and advise the Dean of Letters, Arts and Sciences regarding student issues; faculty and staff hiring and evaluation; curriculum, space and resources. Internal contacts include department chairs, faculty and support staff. Other internal contacts include students and all university administrative areas including offices charged with public and private fund-raising, the Office of Academic and Student Affairs, other Deans’ offices, Faculty Senate leadership, and, occasionally, the Office of the President. Additional regular contacts include the King Center for Performing Arts staff and Advisory Committee, UC Denver and Community College of Denver Arts Departments and Deans on an as-needed basis.



-Provides advocacy and support for the arts at MSU Denver.

-Participates in searches, hiring, faculty mentoring, faculty evaluations, and issues related to affiliate faculty, following applicable Equal Opportunity, HR, and state and federal regulations.

-Works with faculty, staff and students to resolve complaints, and follows university policies and procedures to process and document issues and complaints.

-Facilitates issues for the specific space needs and allocations on the Auraria Campus as related to the arts programs and their accreditation.

-Represents and supports the arts programs in their fundraising and marketing efforts to the entire campus and to the community at large.

-Drafts or supervises major reports, including accreditation reports, and strategic plans.

-Participates in all phases of curriculum and resource planning, grant proposals, public relations, scheduling and staffing for the three arts departments.

-Works with the Dean, Chairs and administration to develop a strategic plan for a possible School of the Arts.

-Supervises the Arts Advisor(s).

-Other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Required Qualifications

A terminal degree in a visual or performing arts discipline.

Minimum six years of full-time tenure-track teaching experience at the college level.

Tenured or eligible for tenure in MSU Denver’s School of Letters, Arts and Sciences.

Working knowledge of academic policies and procedures.

Excellent human relations skills are also necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience as a university/college-level department chair, assistant or associate dean, or dean; or related administrative experience.
