Detailed Job Description

The Vice President of Administration, Finance and Facilities/Chief Financial Officer (CFO)reports directly to the President. This position serves as the University’s chief fiscal officer and fiduciary liaison to the Board of Trustees, State legislative entities, the Colorado Department of Higher Education, and external stakeholders. Serves as a member of the Executive Cabinet which includes: Provost & VP Academic & Student Affairs; VP Advancement and External Affairs & Executive Director MSU Denver Foundation; Associate to the President for Diverity; General Counsel; and Associate to the President for Marketing & Communications/Chief of Staff. Additionally, provides direction to the University’s Equal Opportunity office, the Dean’s offices, Faculty and Staff, and external partners on the impact that fiscal policy and operational decisions may have on University.


Serves as Treasurer of the Board of Trustees, and principal advisor to the President and Board of Trustees on all financial matters relative to the growth and operation of the University. Directs the operations of Human Resources,Institutional Budgets, Facilities Planning and Space Management, Accounting, Student Accounts, and Institutional Research. Indirectly oversees the daily operations for Internal Audit and Athletics.

Formulates, oversees, and presents the College’s financial status to demonstrate sound fiscal operation while recognizing the fiduciary responsibility associated with these matters. Formulates policy and establishes goals and objectives by providing direction for short and long range strategic planning decisions, supporting fund raising efforts and maximizing revenue generation from traditional and nontraditional sources, including public/private partnerships.

The Vice President must understand shared governance and work collegially with MSU Denver’s diverse faculty, staff, students, and other key constituents to foster partnerships. This includes being a member of the HLC@Metro Board of Directors, representing the University on tri-institutional committees, and working with Chief Fiscal Officers from the Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC), the Community College of Denver (CCD), and the University of Colorado at Denver (UCD) on issues related to tri-institutional matters. Oversees the development of MSU Denver’s newly identified neighborhood, facility backfill projects & campus-wide space-swap initiatives. Secures legislative approval, external funding, and oversees the fiscal management of new buildings and services in support of expanding MSU Denver’s presence on the Auraria Campus.

MSU seeks a CFO who will creatively identify and leverage new sources of funding and understand tuition pricing and discounting. MSU will increasingly rely on revenues developed from its own sources and thus needs a CFO who understands the relationship between costs and income, how to use incentives to motivate others, how to maximize revenue generation and how to support the University’s fund raising efforts.

Required Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Business Administration, Finance or related field; candidates should have at least 10 years of directly related experience in progressively responsible financial/administrative management positions. Candidate must be able to demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of the full range of issues addressed by an administration and finance executive that includes leading change in a complex and dynamic environment. Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills required. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a diverse population, legislators and lobbyists, and key external community stakeholders is required. Ability to comprehend and digest large amounts of information, and flexibility to adjust to competing priorities in work schedule is required. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a commitment to diversity and the ability to thrive in an evolving university community.

Preferred Qualifications

Leadership experience in comparable higher education institutions is preferred. Demonstrated experience in public private partnerships or other innovative solutions and/or initiatives.
