Detailed Job Description

Responsible primarily for helping Undeclared/ Exploratory students with choice of major, choosing appropriate courses, and beginning to define a career path, using developmental advising techniques. Academic Advisor & Retention Specialist will make targeted outreach to students to identify potential obstacles to retention and graduation.
The AARS also helps plan and deliver University-wide and College-wide advising programs and initiatives, such as new student orientation advising, support for General Studies, support for Undeclared/ Exploratory initiatives, and support for the University’s Hispanic Serving Institution initiative.

Duties/Responsibilities

50% Provide advising services to Undeclared/ Exploratory students:

  • Conduct individual advising sessions with students
  • Assist with course selection, scheduling and registration
  • Help student with long-term degree planning
  • Help students begin or continue career planning process
  • Refer students to appropriate University resources
  • May require communication in Spanish and English, as appropriate

20% Monitor progress of assigned students

  • Design and implement appropriate interventions
  • Prepare reports on student progress

15% Provide support for University initiatives/programs such as

  • New student orientation
  • Recruitment
  • General education requirements
  • Hispanic Serving Institution

10% Professional Development

  • Remain up to date on advising systems and trends in developmental advising;
  • Become/remain knowledgeable about the curriculum over time
  • Make appropriate use of technology as it changes

5% Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Two years demonstrated experience with developmental advising techniques (or equivalent experience) at an accredited institution
  • Experience using a computer-based student information system (e.g. Ellucian Banner, PeopleSoft, CampusVue, etc.)
  • Experience working with and sensitivity to the needs of a diverse urban student population including, but not limited to, students of color, LGBTQIA students, students from low-income backgrounds, first-generation students, students with disabilities, undocumented students, non-traditional students, Military Veterans, and English-language learners.and be sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in either
    • Higher Education, College Personnel, Counseling, or related OR
    • An academic discipline taught at the University
  • Demonstrated experience working with undeclared/exploratory students
  • Demonstrated experience working with advising software platforms (e.g. Student Success Collaborative, GradesFirst, Starfish, or similar)
  • Demonstrated experience in program assessment
  • Demonstrated experience using social media technology in advising
  • Bilingual in Spanish
