This position counsels clients on business development related matters.

This is a part time, professional position working at the Small Business Development Center. This position is Grant Funded and continuation of the position is dependent upon continued funding. No benefits are associated with this part time position.

Duties & Responsibilities


This position counsels clients on business development related matters.


• Counsels existing and prospective small business entrepreneurs on business-related issues, including marketing, management, finances, taxes, business planning, operations, bookkeeping, etc.

• Reports details of counseling sessions; inputs details into the database.

• Initiates and reports on quarterly follow-up contacts with clients.

• Reviews and provides input on client business plans.

• Reviews and analyzes client financial statements; provides guidance to established businesses related to the resolution of financial or accounting issues.

• Develops marketing materials in support of center programs and services; prepares fliers and newsletters; provides program and event information on the state website.

• Conducts market research.

• Develops and instructs workshops.

• Completes required continuing education training.

• Performs related duties.


• Knowledge of college policies and procedures.

• Knowledge of small business development principles.

• Knowledge of business plan development principles.

• Knowledge of budget management principles.
• Knowledge of marketing principles.

• Skill in the operation of computers and job related software programs.

The Director of SBDC assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.


Guidelines include college and center policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.


• The work consists of varied advising and consulting duties. The unique needs of each business contribute to the complexity of the position.

• The purpose of this position is provide services and counseling to clients of the Small Business Development Center. Success in this position contributes to the successful development of area businesses.


• Contacts are typically with co-workers, other college personnel, faculty, staff, students, business owners, lenders, economic development personnel, and members of the general public.

• Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, to resolve problems, to provide services, or to motivate or influence persons.


• The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects and distinguishes between shades of color.

• The work is typically performed in an office.




• Baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field is required. • One to three years of work experience in a small business setting handling comprehensive small business operations is required. • Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems is required. • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of New Mexico for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
