Mathematics/Statistics Instructor

Essential Functions:

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to teaching Statistics along with the full complement of the courses in mathematics and to work closely with K-12 and 4-year transfer institutions to enhance and promote Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM ) fields of study and careers before students enter college. Teaching assignments may include a variety of instructional settings and times, including evenings and weekends; curriculum and program development and/or revision, including program review and the development and assessment of student learning outcomes for courses and programs; serving as a positive professor and role model for the students; communicating effectively and professionally with students and staff; developing technology used for classroom presentations; advising and motivating students; participating in college/district committees; participating in appropriate professional meetings and workshops; cooperating with regard to scheduling classes between colleagues in the same disciplines and campus wide for the benefit of the campus community; participating in student recruiting activities; assisting in the advancement of the institutional mission and goals; and otherwise fulfilling the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Minimum Qualifications:

Include an earned master’s degree in mathematics or applied mathematics; OR bachelor’s degree in either of the above and master’s degree in statistics, physics, or mathematics education; OR a valid California Community College credential; OR the equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency); AND demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications:

Include classroom teaching experience at the secondary or post-secondary level; the ability and desire to teach the breadth of the department’s course offerings; interest or successful experience in diverse methods of teaching mathematics including incorporating instructional technologies into the classroom and integrating online resources into instruction with demonstrated student success; familiarity with current trends in curriculum and assessment; experience writing and assessing student learning outcomes; the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to promote student success; demonstrated ability in developing successful instructional strategies for non-traditional or academically at-risk students; experience working with students of different academic, cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds, learning styles, and disabilities; the demonstrated ability to generate excitement in learning mathematics across the diverse spectrum of the students; and demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team dedicated to excellence.

Conditions of Employment:

177 duty days.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary is $54,029 – $81,342 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,021 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:

Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and College President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
