The Department of Biology at the University of La Verne invites outstanding applicants to apply for the Fletcher Jones Endowed Chair in Computational Biology- a full-time tenured position at the rank of Full Professor. The specific field of expertise in biology is open, although interdisciplinary connections and a health focus is highly desirable. The College’s Fletcher Jones Endowed Chair is provided by the generosity and philanthropic support of the Fletcher Jones Foundation. Candidates must be committed to excellence in teaching. Candidates must have a strong record of peer-reviewed publications and obtaining research funding. Candidates must possess a strong desire to teach undergraduate courses and establish research projects that provide valuable learning opportunities for undergraduates. The position includes a dedicated budget to support community outreach activities and research, so candidates should demonstrate an interest in community engagement.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in the life sciences curriculum. Other responsibilities include: teaching a portion of the introductory course for first-year biology majors, academic advising, mentoring, faculty committee participation, and the development of an extramurally funded research program involving undergraduates, with a focus on computational biology. The ability to teach biochemistry, genetics, cellular biology, and/or an undergraduate course in bioinformatics is desirable.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a field related to computational biology and credentials that merit tenure and full professor status. In addition, the applicant should have expertise in the field of Computational Biology with strong computer programming skills and/or experience with computer simulation and/or, and/or epidemiology, and/or mathematical-modeling with a background emphasis that could be applied to one or more of the fields within the Natural Science Division (Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science and Chemistry).
The preferred candidate will also have a history of active participation in professional development as evidenced by presentations and publications; display a readiness to work closely with undergraduate students and faculty colleagues through research and service initiatives; and exhibit the leadership abilities necessary to expand our distinctive, interdisciplinary, and increasingly health-oriented initiatives within the College of Arts and Sciences.
