The Director for Student Health Services (SHS) is a member of the Division of Student Affairs and reports to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs. The primary responsibilities of this position include: evaluation of student health and wellness needs, interventions, as well as clinical and administrative duties. The Director is responsible for hiring all departmental staff; maintaining professional standards for the Student Health Services Department; assisting students with their routine and emergency health care; identifying appropriate medical resources in the community and promoting preventive health care for students, administration, and faculty.
Coordinate student health care for a 24/7 operation within the philosophical and legal boundaries of the school and professional standards;
Serve as the resource person for all health care and insurance needs for students and the community as necessary, and refer to health care professionals, specialists, other clinics, hospitals, and community agencies as appropriate;
Supervise the monitoring of student immunization requirements, including checking records, notifying student of non-compliance and ensuring accurate input;
Maintain Medicat System utilized for all student medical records;
Schedule staff nurses to include day, evening and weekend coverage;
Maintain annual records including licensure and certification for all licensed personnel;
Continuously monitor, assess and evaluate the performance of all SHS staff;
Coordinate and monitor physician and physician assistant services at the university;
Collaborate with university departments including Admissions, Public Safety, Campus Life, Academic Affairs, The Learning Center and Residential Life to communicate issues and policies as needed;
Respond to parental concerns re: student health care including insurance and personal issues;
Prepare and manage SHS annual budget;
Maintain membership and participate in activities of the American College Health
Association, New England College Health Association, and American Nurse’s Association;
Provide annual training for health service professionals and the work -study staff on SHS policies/procedures;
Order medical and pharmaceutical supplies as needed; maintain an ongoing inventory of items that are current and maintain supplies for pandemic illness and other health emergencies;
Oversee the storage and disposition of hazardous medical waste;
Provide ongoing influenza resource education to the university community and assist with coordination of the annual influenza vaccine clinic;
Generate a monthly report re: SHS for the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs.
Monitor, review and expand physician standing orders under supervision of the
University Medical Director on an annual basis;
Maintain strict confidentiality at all times concerning the details of health records including assessment, diagnosis, treatment and referral;
Maintain student records in a systematic format that protects confidentiality; and monitors confidentiality within the workplace environment;
Oversee requirements for medical records including immunizations to correspond with university policy and Connecticut Department of Health regulation;
Record all claim forms for trauma and medical treatment with administrative services and student insurance company as appropriate;
Notify appropriate departments re: communicable diseases;
Maintain directory of reliable health facilities for referrals;
Assure departmental readiness for annual state inspection through adherence to state guidelines for medical records and clinic operation, including the maintenance of a continuous clean
working environment, with attention to disinfecting clinic areas as needed.
Provide administrative and clinical supervision for Student Health Services personnel; and administrative supervision for work-study students;
Oversee the services provided in the Health and Wellness Center ensuring the highest levels of care.
Requirements include a master’s degree in Nursing and post-graduate completion of a family or adult nurse practitioner program eligible for APRN licensure and certification in the State of Connecticut as well as current CPR/AED certification. An understanding of developmental issues related to college students is ideal. Preferred candidates will have relevant practice experience as an APRN in health care. Candidates should also have related administrative experience (e.g. in a school-based clinic, occupational health setting, institution of higher education or an outpatient clinical setting). The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of and experience with student health issues and treatment. Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to discuss policy and apply it effectively in confidential situations with faculty, staff and students and interact with students and parents in crisis. The successful candidate will demonstrate clinical expertise and experience in supervision,critical thinking, crisis management, decision-making and an understanding of the mission and policies of the institution.
