Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Communication & Financial Literacy the Financial Aid Default Specialist is responsible for assisting with the default management plan, general financial literacy activities, and financial aid communications. This position assists with training campus, centers and other personnel on the implementation of the plan; responding to borrowers’ emails and phone calls regarding their student loans and lenders; and working within the organization to assure compliance with federal, lender, and Saint Leo University (SLU) regulations/requirements regarding delinquent/defaulted borrowers and financial literacy initiatives.
•Provide support to default management plan and financial literacy activities to assure lowest possible default rates and general financial success of former and current students.
•Assist campus and center locations with providing loan counseling and loan information to student and parent borrowers consistent with federal and alternative loan requirements.
•Work with lenders/servicers and default prevention servicers to continually improve effectiveness of default management and financial literacy initiatives.
•Perform financial aid literacy workshops, deliver open house and classroom presentations, and execute other outreach activities.
•Conduct courtesy phone calls to borrowers on a daily basis, serving as a liaison between Saint Leo University and borrowers’ lenders/servicers.
•Routinely respond to borrowers’ emails and phone calls regarding their student loans and lenders; supplying loan information.
•Assist with phone, email, and hard mail loan default management campaigns.
•Provide administrative support to the strategic communication plan; including sending out mass emails through TargetX
•Other duties as assigned.
•Requires in depth knowledge of financial aid terminology, processes and activities.
•Proficient in public speaking.
•Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
•Strong interpersonal skills with student and staff populations.
•Superior organization, prioritization, and self-motivation skills.
•Strong computer skills; proficiency in MS Office Suite.
•Ability to learn and understand technical procedures.
•Ability to interact effectively as either a leader or as a member of a team and work collaboratively with other departments.
•Strong multitasking capabilities.
•Must have flexibility to travel between Financial Aid Office – Channelside location and the Saint Leo University Campus.
•Associates Degree or higher
•Minimum one year of experience in default management, call center support, student lending, banking, higher education, or financial aid counseling
•Bachelor’s Degree or higher
•Minimum two years of experience in default management, call center support, student lending, or financial aid counseling
•Experience preparing and presenting training material to individuals and groups
•Experience with Datatel Colleague and National Student Loan Database
