Description of Duties:
Bentley University's Spiritual Life Center welcome applications for a Muslim adviser/chaplain, a less than part-time (approximately 5 hours p/week), onsite position in the division of Student Affairs. This is a nine month, contract assignment with the possibility of renewal reporting to the Director of Spiritual Life. The Muslim adviser/chaplain serves as the key campus representative for Muslim students, faculty and staff. This role contributes to the comprehensive Spiritual Life Center team who serve the campus community in supporting, facilitating and observing religious traditions and practices as well as spiritual development for students. He or she will work closely with the other chaplains of the Spiritual Life Center to foster and enrich spiritual life on campus.
Additional Description of Duties: Key responsibilities include:
-To provide pastoral leadership to Muslim students, faculty and staff including opportunities for worship, prayer, mentoring and counseling.
-To advise the Bentley Islamic Community (student organization) and be an advocate for the spiritual and logistical needs of Muslim students at Bentley.
-To offer non-Muslim opportunities to learn about the broad Islamic tradition; to articulate a thoughtful and engaged Muslim perspective on global religious and political developments in public settings.
-To be an active member of the Spiritual Life team by attending bi-weekly team meetings, regularly scheduled meetings with the Director, events sponsored by the Center and other duties as needed to support the Center's mission.
-To encourage students to participate in community service opportunities as organized by the Spiritual Life team
-To represent the Center when the Director may need team members to speak on behalf of Spiritual Life.
Candidates should possess an appropriate Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, with evident of professional preparation for chaplaincy. Demonstration of dealing with confidential and sensitive issues with significant experience in campus religious life, particularly with the Islamic tradition; familiarity with a diverse higher education environment; and with the developmental issues of young adults. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work with undergraduate and colleagues from a variety of backgrounds, traditions and cultures are essential.
