Essential Functions:

Include teaching a full range of community college courses in reading, which may range from basic literary through developmental English to advanced levels of critical thinking in the context of essay and argument; communicating effectively with students and staff; developing and revising curriculum; participating actively in a program review process; attending and participating in appropriate professional meetings and workshops; serving on college and district committees; and otherwise fulfilling all duties and responsibilities of instructors as required.

Duties may include assignments in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evenings, weekends, and/or off-campus.

Minimum Qualifications:

Include an earned master’s degree in education with a specialization in reading or teaching reading; OR bachelor’s degree in any academic discipline and 12 semester units of course work in teaching reading and master’s degree in English, literature, linguistics, applied linguistics, composition, comparative literature, TESL , or psychology; OR a valid California Community College Credential; OR the equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency); AND demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications:

Include teaching experience at the secondary or post-secondary level; knowledge of current theories and practice of reading process and pedagogy and of critical thinking; knowledge of theories and practice of teaching second language learners; preparation for, and interest in, developmental education; experience working with students of various ages and cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds; knowledge of the development and assessment of student learning outcomes; ability to take a leadership role in pre-collegiate basic skills; experience in computer-assisted instruction and other instructional technologies; related work and professional experience; knowledge of the community college and its mission and goals, potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth, and preparation for and interest in teaching community college students.

Salary and Benefits:

Salary is $54,029 – $81,342 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,021 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:

Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement.

From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview.

The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and College President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
