The Department of Language Studies and the Arts is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure track faculty position to teach English courses at our South Hampton Roads center in South Hampton Roads, Virginia.


This is a twelve (12) month, year round, full-time faculty appointment at the Instructor/Assistant/Associate rank with eight (8) week release time to be determined in consultation with the department chair.


An exceptional candidate possessing a doctorate degree with experience may be considered at the Associate level.


Candidates possessing a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with 18 hours of graduate study and/or credentials to teach English may be considered at the instructor level.


Review of candidate materials begins immediately for anticipated start date of August 2016. To apply, submit letter of introduction documenting successful teaching experience; curriculum vitae; three letters of recommendation (all should be professional references and at least one from a recent superior); values statement (500 words or less) and teaching philosophy (500 words or less), which highlights how your teaching and administrative philosophy and practices fit the Mission and Values of Saint Leo University; official transcripts (including WES evaluation if from an international university).


Position pending final budget approval.

Basic Function:

The faculty member will be required to:

  • Teach 9 classes per year;
  • Advise students;
  • Assess, assist, and guide on ground and online adjunct English faculty under the direction of the department chair;
  • Engage in curriculum development;
  • Support recruiting efforts;
  • Demonstrate professional development (e.g., scholarly research);
  • Undertake community service in keeping with the school’s Benedictine values;
  • Teach on-ground and VTT undergraduate classes;
  • Be able to teach traditional and non-traditional age students; and
  • Demonstrate the ability to use discipline-related computer programs.

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

The faculty member will have experience teaching academic writing and general education literature or creative writing courses, preferably to adult learners. Courses may be delivered in person at South Hampton Roads Center or other nearby center, or via VTT. Some travel to area centers or bases may be required.
