The Department of Social Sciences is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time faculty position to teach U.S. History courses at our main campus near Tampa, Florida


This is a nine (9) month, full-time faculty appointment at the Instructor or Assistant Professor rank.


Review of candidate materials begins immediately for anticipated start date of August 2016. To apply, submit letter of introduction documenting successful teaching experience; curriculum vitae; three letters of recommendation (all should be professional references and at least one from a recent superior); values statement (500 words or less) and teaching philosophy (500 words or less), which highlights how your teaching philosophy and practices fit the Mission and Values of Saint Leo University; official transcripts (including WES evaluation if from an international university); and student evaluations from the last year.


A candidate possessing a master’s degree with 18 graduate study hours in the discipline and demonstrated teaching with appropriate years of experience in higher education may be considered at the Instructor level.

Basic Function:

The faculty member will be required to:

  • Teach 8 classes per year;
  • Advise students;
  • Engage in curriculum development;
  • Demonstrate professional development (e.g., scholarly research, conference papers);
  • Undertake community service in keeping with the school’s Benedictine values;
  • Serve on committees;
  • Demonstrate effective student engagement within the classroom

Required Education/Experience/Skills:

Master’s or Ph.D. Degree in history with extensive experience teaching a wide range of U.S. history courses.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must possess a Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with 18 hours of graduate study in history and extensive teaching experience in history at the college level may be considered at the rank of instructor.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s or Ph.D. degree in U.S. History with a sub-specialization in a non-U.S. area such as Middle East, Africa, Far East, Europe, Russia, or Latin America; or a sub-specialization in women’s history, applied/public history, Native American history, political history, or other area of sub-specialization (excluding African American History).
