West Valley College is now accepting applications for a full-time, tenure-track teaching/coaching position as a Physical Education Instructor and Softball Coach. Under the general direction of the Physical Education Division Chair and the Athletic Director, this position’s responsibilities will involve teaching physical education courses in fitness/wellness activities, lifetime sports, and team sports. A minimum of 50% of the teaching assignment’s responsibilities will include leadership and coordination of all aspects of the baseball program. The successful candidate will be expected to assume departmental responsibilities for curriculum development, evaluation of faculty, and college-wide committee assignments.

This is a full-time, 10-month, tenure track position, which begins in Spring 2016, with an anticipated start date of March 2, 2016. The work assignment for teaching faculty consists of class assignments in activity and other Physical Education classes, and professional responsibilities, such as curriculum development and committee work, which are necessary for the effective and efficient operation of the department, College and the District. This position is represented by the Association of College Educators (ACE).

We have begun a district-wide classification and compensation study. The compensation study will provide information on what other employers pay employees who are performing similar duties. The District will use this information to ensure that our employees are adequately compensated.
The classification & compensation study started in November 2014 and is expected to take approximately 12-18 months to complete. As a result of this study, it is possible for the compensation to change in this position opening.
1.Education – Possess one of the following:
- Master’s degree in physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology; physiology of exercise, or adaptive physical education; OR
- Bachelor’s degree in any of the above AND master’s degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration, or physical therapy; OR
- A valid California Community College Instructor’s Credential in physical education; OR
- The equivalent of the above.
2. Demonstrated ability to effectively work with persons of diverse socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Master’s degree in Physical Education.
- Three years of successful coaching experience in softball including high school and college.
- Successful teaching experience, preferably at the community college level.
- Ability to establish and maintain contact with district high school coaches and athletes.
- Ability to recruit softball athletes.
- Ability to coordinate with other college colleagues and support staff, as well as the greater softball community.
- Knowledge of academic requirements for maintaining academic eligibility and transfer to four-year programs.
- Experience in supporting and advising students towards achieving positive academic and athletic progress.
- Current computer literacy.
- Desire and ability to participate in and contribute to the Physical Education and Athletic Departments “team” approach to implementing their programs.
- Knowledge, skills, and ability to use multiple teaching strategies to promote the success of community college students whom have varied learning styles, diverse backgrounds, and different fitness goals.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities
Instructional duties and assignments may consist of one or more of the following:
- Provide instruction for assigned courses. This includes preparation, in class activities, evaluation of students’ work, consultation with students outside of class (scheduling time beyond normal office hours if necessary), maintenance of currency in the subjects taught and other efforts related to the teaching of the assigned classes.
- Maintain accurate class and other records conforming with state requirements and stated district and college needs.
- Submit, when due, all necessary reports, such as attendance, grade reports, rosters, classes and office hour schedules.
- Follow course outline for each course with the appropriate division offices.
- Post and maintain office hours each week in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement.
- Observe, support and enforce the regulations, policies and programs of the District and college.
- Provide each student with a written course syllabus as per instructions in the Faculty handbook at the beginning of the course.
- Refer students to appropriate college sources for information on counseling and other student services.
- Assist students by providing advice on requirements for successful achievement in the member’s area of expertise.
- Work cooperatively within the college community.
- Foster an environment that protects academic freedom within the college community.
- Foster a positive working environment that is free from harassment, prejudice, and/or bias.
- Demonstrate positive communication skills within the college community.
- Demonstrate a respect for the dignity of each individual.
- Assume institutional responsibilities, which are of value to the department, division, college and/or District such as: actively participate in the spirit of shared governance in department, division, college and district institutional responsibilities. Such responsibilities may include recruitment and hiring, class schedule preparation, budget development, performance appraisals, mentorship, supervision of support staff, student recruitment and retention, curriculum and program development and evaluation, program review, club advising, committees, accreditation, articulation, and other duties as assigned.
