Detailed Job Description

The Social Media Specialist will function as part of the university's central communications team developing and implementing social media strategies and work collaboratively with other divisions.

Additional Department Summary:

This position will be responsible for developing and implementing social media strategies to increase engagement with key stakeholders and enhance and protect the university's reputation. It requires day-to-day management of UA's top-tier social media sites, such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube, and providing strategic direction for the university's digital footprint. The Social Media Specialist will be adept at developing overall strategies for social media; building and growing online communities; creating and curating content that is compelling and engaging in both written and visual formats; and advising other university stakeholders on best practices in social media to advance the university's brand and provide reputation management.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience.

Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications:

Two (2) - Four (4) years of professional social media experience. Experience managing a brand's Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and YouTube platforms.

Skills and Knowledge:

Advanced knowledge of how to leverage and measure social media sites; working knowledge of web analytics; ability to take photos and videos for social media use; familiarity with video and photo sharing sites and photo/video editing techniques is a plus; exposure to Public Relations function; experience with social media management software; and experience working in an environment that requires handling confidential information. excellent writing skills; demonstrated enthusiasm and history of professionalism on social media sites (personal and/or professional); must be comfortable with mobile devices and tablets; knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office Suite.Special Conditions: This position will be required to work nights and weekends as necessary. Position may require long periods of sitting at a computer or other digital device. The University of Alabama is a smoke-free university.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S.) – preferred areas of Communications, Marketing, Public Relations or Journalism;

Pay Grade/Pay Range:

Based on Qualifications This position will be required to work nights and weekends as necessary. Position may require long periods of sitting at a computer or other digital device. The University of Alabama is a smoke-free university.
