Detailed Job Description

The College of Business at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is seeking qualified applicants for a Chief Academic Advisor. This is a renewable term, twelve month administrative professional position, and is contingent on availability of funding.

Duties: This position serves as the primary point of contact for undergraduate academic issues in the College of Business, as well as oversees and directs the activities of student advisors, support staff, student employees and a graduate assistant. This position provides academic advisement of undergraduate students with specialized needs regarding degree requirements, course selection, appropriate major selection, academic status, and academic progress including authorization of exceptions to College policy (e.g. overload requests, course withdrawals, transfer equivalencies, graduation problems, and scholastic difficulties). The Chief Academic Advisor coordinates College activities/exercises in conjunction with honors day/weekend programs and commencement.

Required Qualifications:

  • a master's degree in business, student personnel, counseling, or higher education (master's degree in business is preferred)
  • a minimum of two years of experience in academic advising (three or more years of experience in academic advising is preferred)
  • experience supervising staff in an educational institution

Preferred Qualifications:

  • demonstrated experience and usage of advisement technology including Banner, Student Success Collaborative, ARGOS, Extender, and Bolt-On
  • evidence of a strong attention to detail, high level of professionalism, adherence to policies and procedures, and interpersonal skills as well as experience with business disciplines
  • demonstrated communication, organizational, administrative, and leadership skills, including the ability to provide advising, counseling and coaching related to academic issues with a diverse student population as well as other units across campus
  • ability to work independently, collaboratively, and effectively under pressure in a metrics-oriented environment
