It provides instruction to students at all levels in an environment informed by the research, scholarship and creative work of its faculty and students. It maintains undergraduate, graduate and professional programs of international distinction and extends, as appropriate, its knowledge-based resources to address city, state, national and international needs.
Columbia University in New York City is seeking candidates and nominees of exceptional scholarly and professional accomplishment for the position of Executive Vice President for Arts and Sciences and Dean of the Faculty. As Dean, the individual would report directly to the Provost and Dean of Faculties of the University. As Executive Vice President, the individual would report directly to the President, and would be a member of the President’s cabinet. As the chief academic and operating officer of the Arts and Sciences, the Executive Vice President oversees over 760 full-time faculty and over 10,000 students and is responsible for faculty recruitment and promotion, instructional staffing, and financial and administrative management. The Executive Vice President and Dean is responsible for the planning and budgeting for the Arts and Sciences. The Arts and Sciences are comprised of five schools administered by deans: Columbia College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the School of the Arts, the School of General Studies, the School of Continuing Education, and 27 academic departments. The deans of those schools and chairs of those departments report directly to the Executive Vice President and Dean of the faculty of Arts and Sciences, who is supported by Deans for the Humanities, Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences.
The Executive Vice President chairs the Executive Committee of the Arts and Sciences, whose other members are the Dean of Columbia College and Vice President for Undergraduate Education and the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Vice President for Graduate Education. He or she also chairs the Policy and Budgeting Committee, which consists of the Deans of the schools and the Chair and Deputy Chair of the Policy Planning Committee, the elected faculty governance committee. The Executive Vice President, on the advice of the Promotion and Tenure Committee, makes tenure recommendations to the Provost.
Columbia University seeks a visionary leader as its seventh Executive Vice President and Dean of the Faculty who will enhance and strengthen the position of the Arts and Sciences within the University and on the national and global stage. The new Executive Vice President will need to provide both innovative academic and administrative leadership as well as help shape a growth strategy, and build on the critical external relationships so essential to the University. The Executive Vice President will have the full support of the President and Provost of Columbia University. Nominees or applicants must hold an earned doctorate with scholarly credentials suitable for tenure in a department within the Arts and Sciences and a distinguished record of teaching. Substantial prior administrative experience is desirable.
