The Payroll Analyst is responsible for analysis and evaluation of payroll processes, procedures and functions, including proposal, development, and continued evaluation of process improvements. This position works with international employees at Miami, including tax handling, reporting, and required filing of tax forms. This position also processes payroll as required. Excellent customer service skills are a necessity.
Payroll office scope is approximately 155,000 pay events per year, consisting of faculty, classified and unclassified administrative and technical employees, hourly employees, and student employees. Approximately 700 employees of the University are non-US citizens, requiring special tax handling and reporting. Other tax considerations include nine states, numerous city and school district taxes, levies, garnishments, and child-support deductions. Payroll is processed in-house.
Analyze payroll processes and develop and implement changes based upon LEAN principles to improve efficiency and effectiveness and reduce University costs.
Reviews Payroll policies and procedures and recommend changes based upon changes to applicable laws (taxes, garnishments, retirement, etc.), technology changes (upgraded functionality or implementing previously unused functionality), and use of LEAN principles to reduce waste.
Research system and process errors, collaborate with other departments as needed to identify cause of error and resolution, both short and long-term.
Assist in all functions of the department to meet deadlines as required.
Maintain confidentiality of information.
Perform related duties as required.
Reports to the Director of Payroll Services.
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field.
Minimum of two years of related experience.
Proven experience in identifying and quantifying complex problems and providing creative resolutions to solve.
Demonstrated knowledge of Payroll, Personnel, and Benefits policies, procedures, and work flow.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to convey information to internal and external customers in a clear, focused, and concise manner.
Master's degree in accounting or related field.
Familiarity with Ellucian Banner and Kronos Workforce a plus.
Demonstrated knowledge of federal, state, and Ohio local payroll taxes and relating reporting requirements.
FPC or CPP certification.
Experience with higher education.
Experience with implementation of LEAN principles or other continuous quality improvement processes in an office setting.
