Under general direction, is responsible to provide advising information throughout the academic year; provides support to students during the registration process; explores various major and career options and works to improve the academic performance of University students.
Knowledge of University policies and procedures, academic requirements, campus resources, student life, and support services
Sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population, including minority and international students
Interpersonal/human relations skills
Ability to encourage and empower students to make their own decisions
Ability to act as an advocate for both the student and the University
Ability to identify students’ needs for support services in order to make appropriate referrals
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Ability to operate a personal computer and various software packages
Ability to work a flexible schedule
Master’s degree; supplemented with one (1) year of related work experience in a higher education setting
Advises and counsels students for fall, spring, and summer semester course selections; analyzes student records in preparation for orientation appointments; advises students of scheduled follow-up appointments.
Oversee student groups/organizations providing leadership and university support.
Provides leadership in the area of retention for respective advising area, including providing individual attention to students to assure their connectedness to campus and personal and academic success.
Interacts collaboratively with faculty mentors to ensure a coordinated effort to advise and register students.
Receives and gives referrals to and from faculty and other University offices for students’ major considerations, academic issues, or personal concerns.
Participates in office staff development, workshops, programs, and administrative functions; attends meetings; performs other duties as assigned.
