The Director of Accessible Technology provides leadership in accessibility compliance and coordinates institutional efforts to implement and use assistive technologies to maintain an accessible environment.

Duties

1.  Coordinate the compliance of the university website, online courses, and adaptive technology and alternate media services within the general requirements of the ADA, Section 504 and their applicable regulations.

2.  Lead efforts to create policy in the area of providing mandated accessible campus resources.

3.  Direct the conversion of printed material into alternate formats for students.

4.  Evaluate and recommend a variety of adaptive hardware and software involved in the delivery of services and instruction to students and employees with disabilities.

5.  Work with faculty to make online courses and technology in the classroom accessible.

6.  Oversee maintenance, troubleshooting, and updating adaptive technology hardware and software in computer labs and offices across campus.

7.  Function as a resource to faculty and staff in the use and suitability of technology solutions for individuals with disabilities.

8.  Develop individual and group training for faculty and staff in the areas of adaptive technology for distance education, electronic information, and alternate media formats.

9.  Provide expertise in accessible technology for campus technology projects.

10. Stay abreast of legislation and national, state, and local issues affecting access for students with disabilities and ensure campus compliance.

11. Maintain currency of new access technology guidelines and laws relating to individuals with disabilities, alternate media, distance education and electronic information.

12. Stay abreast of new ways to deliver print, electronic, non-electronic or non-digital materials in accessible formats, new sources of accessible books and other learning materials, and copyright issues impacting document conversion.

13. Represent the university on statewide accessibility committees and consortiums.

14. Actively promotes a customer-oriented approach throughout IT Services.

15. Participates in professional development activities.

16. Perform related duties as required or assigned.

17. May teach an approved one credit hour course per semester on an as needed basis and with division approval.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field, earned by date of hire
  • 5 years of experience providing adaptive technology interventions to solve technology access issues with a broad array of disability populations

Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience providing the knowledge/skills/abilities listed above may be substituted. Experience in these knowledge/skills/abilities may be earned concurrently.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Computer and Information Systems, Business Systems or other similar related area of study, earned by date of hire.
  • 5+ years of experience working in an information technology area
  • 7+ years of demonstrated experience providing adaptive technology interventions to solve technology access issues with a broad array of disability populations, preference for higher education environment.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating & testing accessibility & usability of web pages, content and applications for accessibility.
  • Significant working knowledge of adaptive equipment, software, and various operating systems.
  • Demonstrated experience working with disability services and assistive technology, including equipment.
  • Significant working knowledge of web accessibility and usability standards including Section 504, WCAG 2.0, ATAG 2.0, UAAG 1.0, WAI-ARIA, and MathML, WCAG21CT, DAISY Standard and EPUB3.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state laws regarding disability access and compliance, including Section 504, of the Rehabilitation Act and general requirements of the ADA.
  • Working knowledge of accessible electronic document development, production, formats, and remediation including academic materials such as textbooks.
  • Demonstrated excellent written/oral communication skills, technical documentation skills, user liaison skills, and personal interaction abilities.
  • Accessibility certifications through organizations such as IAAP (International Association of Accessibility Professionals).
