There's never a dull moment when working on publications as part of the University Communications and Marketing team. You will need to be a thinker, author, problem-solver, and storyteller of our brand. At times you will need to tell a compelling story throughout an 80-page viewbook. Other times, you'll craft a two-word anthem that will ring loud and true with our target audience. In between, there will be postcards and pamphlets, billboards and brochures…all talking to a teen, like a teen.

The University Marketing Copywriter/Editor will collaborate with appropriate staff and team members to write, edit, and prepare for production a variety of university communications, primarily directed toward external audiences. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated understanding of the difference between writing for print publications, advertising, and websites.

He/she will be expected to embrace our project management system in order to assist in managing project timelines and maintaining deadlines to ensure timely completion of projects. The successful candidate will be able to take/deliver creative and editorial feedback from/to colleagues who do not report directly to him/her, and will drive results while keeping projects on track. He/she will consult with university divisions and departments across campus to help produce graphic, photographic, and print production requirements. 

Duties

  • Collaborate with production/traffic manager, other editors, designers, photographers, web team, and other appropriate staff to produce publications and other materials for university relations, recruiting, and events.
  • Brainstorm visual and copy ideas with other members of the creative team
  • Interact with outside printers to establish relationships, and ensure high quality of product and services.
  • Consult with clients, including faculty, staff and students, to determine project scope, expectations, deadlines, and necessary resources.
  • Write, present, and modify copy for clients.
  • Proofread other editor's materials.
  • Research content, conduct interviews, and prepare profiles.
  • Assist in maintaining project deadlines and feasibility during the production of materials.
  • Follow process and utilize appropriate software/tools for successfully monitoring progress of active projects, providing support as needed to ensure timely completion.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects.
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned.  

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • One to three (1-3) years experience 

Preferred Qualifications

  • One to three (1-3) years experience in an ad agency setting
  • Highly creative, curious, and imaginative
  • Experience in printing environment or print coordination
  • Knowledge of and willingness to collaborate with web team, social media, photo/video, and trademarks & licensing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Customer service skills; including diplomatically, patiently, and successfully handling complaints, problems, questions, conflict, and suggestions
  • Knowledge of AP Style and experience working within brand guidelines
  • Self-motivated and well organized
  • Ability to show discretion and maintain confidentiality
  • Ability and willingness to work independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Ability to prioritize and work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Keen attention to detail.
