Detailed Job Description

The Development Director for the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine provides leadership to and management of the planning, execution, and evaluation of fundraising and development related activities. This will include, but is not limited to, major gift fundraising and actively managing (including personal solicitations) a diversified portfolio of financial resources that can support the medical education program. The Director of Development will be responsible for designing and implementing a fund raising approach that will support the respective missions of the college. These areas include building a strong scholarship program, partnering with the clinical affiliates to design community partner and grateful patient programs, anticipate an alumni fund as the medical students graduate, and secure support for research and endowed chair/director positions.

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree AND six (6) years of progressively responsible experience which includes three (3) years of full-time professional fund raising experience and at least two (2) years in an institution of higher education. Demonstrated success in proposal writing and submission, evidence of ability to plan and execute a fund drive (i.e. responsibility for a project from conception to realization), demonstrated success in face-to-face solicitations of gifts of $25,000 or more OR comparable experience. Comparable experience includes six (6) years of progressively responsible full-time sales, marketing, public relations, or advancement experience which has involved direct, face-to-face contact with clients, customers, prospective customers and members of the public, program oversight and management, clearly defined goals and objectives and a demonstrated track record of success may be substituted for the experience requirements. A Master’s degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.

Demonstrated skills in building and managing personal relationships.

Demonstrated follow-through and communication with colleagues and donors.

Advanced degree in a related field (i.e. education, public relations, law, etc.)

The College
The Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is dedicated to training new doctors to alleviate Washington’s physician shortage and to making the state a healthier place to live. The college expects to begin training students in the fall of 2017. Though its administration is based in Spokane, the medical school will assign students to one of four WSU clinical campuses in Spokane, the Tri-Cities, Vancouver and Everett. The college is also home to world-class researchers in areas such as sleep, neuroscience and cancer. Its Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences trains students for careers as speech pathologists and conducts research in areas such as autism and several other types of communication disorders.
